The Southern Food & Beverage Museum (SoFAB), Eat Fit NOLA, and The University of Queensland - Ochsner Clinical School have formed a partnership to educate the public on how to address health maladies through culinary medicine and dietary practices. A team of third and fourth year medical students, a chef, and a nutritionist from Eat Fit NOLA will offer health and culinary insights in a program filled with information on how to eat for preventative health. Kicking off on Saturday, September 3, 2016, the programs will be held in the Rouses Culinary Innovation Center by Jenn-Air in the Southern Food & Beverage Museum on the first Saturday of every month at 2PM.

The topics are as follows:

September 3, 2016: Iron, the metal that keeps you alive

Without iron your body cannot access all that oxygen you're breathing in, yet 12% of the world's population is estimated to be affected by iron deficiency. Learn how your body uses, loses, and stores iron and how to maximize the iron in a healthy diet. We'll explore delicious ways to add iron to your regular cooking rotation with the help of Chef Hosie Bourgeois of Beau Chene Country Club in Mandeville.

October 1, 2016: Electrolytes

We'll examine what electrolytes actually do and unpack the science of sports drinks.

November 5, 2016: Magic Microbiome

We'll examine what bacteria does for us and how it affects your health.

December 3, 2016: Sugar Series

Just in time for the holidays, we'll take a closer look at the glycemic index and how it affects you.

January 7, 2017: Fad Diets

'Tis the season of New Year's Resolutions, and we'll be breaking down the Paleo craze.

February 4, 2017: FATS

More than a four letter word. The difference between good vs bad fat?

*Additional topics are being developed.

Participation in the classes is free with museum admission, $10.50 for adults, $5.25 for seniors over 60. Museum members receive free admission at all times. The Southern Food & Beverage Museum is a nonprofit living history organization dedicated to the discovery, understanding and celebration of the food, drink and the related culture of the South. While based in New Orleans, the Museum examines and celebrates all the cultures that have come together through the centuries to create the South's unique culinary heritage. SoFAB also hosts special exhibits, demonstrations, lectures and tastings that showcase the food and drink of the South.

The University of Queensland - Ochsner Clinical School offers students a unique and exciting opportunity to gain clinical experience in the United States working within the Ochsner Health System in Louisiana. Ochsner, the state's largest nonprofit, academic, multispecialty healthcare delivery system and owns, manages, or is affiliated with, 25 hospitals and more than 50 health centers across the region. Ochsner is the only Louisiana hospital recognized by US News & World Report as a "Best Hospital" across nine specialty categories. It is also a national leader in medical research, conducting more than 750 clinical research studies every year and producing 200 annual publications in medical literature. Thanks to its partnership with the University of Queensland, Ochsner is one of the largest non-university-based physician training centers in the United States. Through faculty-guided instruction on the comprehension of human illness, the core clinical rotations teach students the essentials of history taking, conducting physical examinations, analyzing laboratory tests, and understanding completely the mechanisms of disease in order to reach a clinical diagnosis and to develop a treatment plan.

Registered dietitians with Ochsner Fitness Center, have collaborated with local restaurants to create Eat Fit NOLA, a partnership that highlights the better-for-you items right on the menu, making it effortless for anyone to eat nutritiously, anywhere in the city.
