On Thursday, November 3, 2016, the French Market District will host its third annual "Baroness Pontalba Birthday Bash" in honor of Micaela Leonarda Antonia Almonester y Rojas, "Baroness de Pontalba", born November 6, 1795, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Baroness was responsible for design, development, and construction of the Pontalba buildings on Jackson Square, the oldest continually rented apartment buildings in the United States, operated and managed by the French Market Corporation.

Enjoy extended shopping hours, retail specials, live opera, historical characters, and a chance to meet Dr. Christina Vella, the author of the definitive biography of the Baroness Pontalba, Intimate Enemies.
New Orleans Opera Association featured performers will honor the memory of the Baroness with selections of the great late opera singer Jenny Lind, known as The Swedish Nightingale. She was hosted by the Baroness and performed one of her famous concerts from the balcony of the Upper Pontalba.

Shop the Shops at the Upper Pontalba until 7:00 p.m., enjoy sips & bites, and raffle prizes for customers who spend $25 or more. Raffles will be held at 5:30 p.m., 6:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.

Event Schedule:

5:00-7:00 p.m. Louisiana History Alive presents The Baroness Pontalba "in person", portrayed by local actress Diana Shortez.
5:45-6:30 p.m. New Orleans Opera Association performs selections from the balcony above the Shops at the Upper Pontalba.
6:00-7:00 p.m. Book signing of Intimate Enemies by Christina Vella at MUSE, Inspired Fashion at 532 St. Peter Street.
6:30 p.m. Happy Birthday, Baroness! Join us in singing Happy Birthday and sharing cake!
