2017 New Orleans Antiques Forum to look at creators of decorative arts
Registration is now open for program to be held Aug. 3-6 in the French Quarter

June 2017 | New Orleans, Louisiana - Registration is now open for The Historic New Orleans Collection's 10th annual New Orleans Antiques Forum, which takes place Thursday, Aug. 3-Sunday, Aug. 6, in the French Quarter. One of the premier decorative arts events in the country, the four-day program includes lively talks and discussions with local and national experts and optional activities.

This year's forum is titled "In Their Hands: Creative Masters of Southern Decorative Art." Jack Pruitt, THNOC director of development and community relations and the event organizer, said the theme "will examine the artistry and influence of those individuals whose hands crafted the decorative arts so cherished in the South."

THNOC established the New Orleans Antiques Forum in 2008 to boost cultural tourism in New Orleans and south Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. This year marks the 10th installment of the event, which offers a series of educational and entertaining talks by renowned experts. Sessions are accessible to experienced collectors as well as beginning antiques enthusiasts and are designed to encourage the appreciation of decorative arts created in and imported through the Gulf Coast. In its tenure, the New Orleans Antiques Forum has grown to become one of the premier events of its kind. The forum sessions take place Friday-Sunday at THNOC's Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres St.

Full-forum participants are also invited to register for the optional preconference day trip on Thursday, Aug. 3. This year the bus tour will visit landmarks in Baton Rouge and St. James Parish, Louisiana, with Eugene D. Cizek and William M. Hyland as guides. Additional optional activities include tours of THNOC's Williams Residence and Louisiana History Galleries, as well as a Sunday jazz brunch at Arnaud's Restaurant. Separate registration is required for the optional activities.

This year's panel of speakers includes Lydia Blackmore, Judith H. Bonner, Sarah Duggan, John H. Lawrence, Priscilla Lawrence and Jack Pruitt of The Historic New Orleans Collection. Joining them are Jason T. Busch, director, Jason Jacques Gallery, New York; Garth Clark, independent scholar and critic; Dr. Jack D. Holden, preservationist and independent scholar; A. Nicholas Powers, the curator of collections, Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, Virginia; William Keyse Rudolph, Andrew W. Mellon Chief Curator and the Marie and Hugh Halff Curator of American Art, San Antonio Museum of Art; Ramsay H. Slugg, managing director of the national wealth planning strategies group, US Trust; and Matthew A. Thurlow, executive director, Decorative Arts Trust.

Tom Savage, director of museum affairs at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library in Delaware, is returning as the forum's moderator.
