DEGAS HOUSE MARKS 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FAMED ARTISTS' DEATH WITH CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE
Statue of Degas' Famous Little Dancer to be unveiled

WHAT: The famous French artist, Edgar Degas, died 100 years ago on September 27, 1917. Degas was famous for his paintings, sculptures, monotypes and drawings, many of which depicted dancers. He is credited as a co-founder of the Impressionist Movement, which began for him here in New Orleans. The Degas House, located on Esplanade Avenue, is the world's only home and studio paying homage to the great artist.

To honor the 100th anniversary of the artist's death, the Degas House will celebrate Degas' life and accomplishments with the unveiling of a bronzed statue of his most popular sculpture known worldwide, Little Dancer of Fourteen Years. The statue was made in a foundry in Europe, author unknown. It's an "After Degas" which is an artists' copy including their own artistic interpretations.

In honor of New Orleans' Tricentennial, the Degas House will be hosting a year-long celebration of Edgar Degas' life, starting with Wednesday's 100- year anniversary of his death. New Orleans is the birthplace of Degas' mother, and he spent time here in 1872 and 1873 creating 18 paintings, 4 drawings and 5 letters.

Orleans, LA 70119

ABOUT the DEGAS HOUSE:
Degas House is the only home of Degas anywhere in the world that is open to the public. The house is a museum and hosts guided tours by Degas' Great Grand-Nieces, special events including wedding ceremonies and receptions, and is a historic Inn and European style bed & Breakfast. It is also the home of the Degas House Foundation which seeks to preserve the legacy of Degas in New Orleans and provide education and cultural programming.
