WHY: The Historic New Orleans Collection’s spring concert series, sponsored by AOS, continues on Friday, May 20, with a performance by Otra and white wine and beer provided by the Hotel Monteleone.
Otra was formed in 2002 by bassist Sam Price. After performing with other New Orleans-area Latin bands that played a standard repertoire of popular Latin covers, Price sought to create an original project that would emphasize creativity, powerful soloing and irresistible grooves, while honoring the Afro-Cuban roots of “Latin” music. Otra attempts to bring a rock ’n’ roll attitude and excitement to its live performances, encouraging audience members to “do their own thing” on the dance floor in an effort to help listeners relate to the music in a new way. The other members of the band are Brent Rose, saxophone; Humberto “Pupi” Menes, tumbadora, bongo and chekere; Rob Block, piano; Cristobal “El Canyon” Cruzado, timbales; and Eric Lucero, trumpet.
The Hotel Monteleone is a member of Historic Hotels of America, and was designated a Literary Landmark by the Friends of the Library Association in 1999, joining the ranks of only two other hotels in the nation—The Plaza Hotel and The Algonquin Hotel, both in New York. The hotel is home to the famous Carousel Bar and Hunt Room Grill and Le Café restaurants.
Admission to the concert—$10 for the public, free for members of The Collection—includes three complimentary cocktails. Household memberships begin at $35 per household and are valid for one year. Guests must be 21 or over. For more information, call (504) 523-4662 or visit www.hnoc.org.
