This fall, European hotelier Klaus Ortlieb brings his home-away-from-home sensibility to the New Orleans hotel scene. Ortlieb, the managing partner of New York City's Cooper Square Hotel and The Gotham Hotel on 46th Street, will open The Hotel Modern New Orleans in the Warehouse-Arts district of the city.
A lover of the city's rich cultural history, Ortlieb wanted to open a lifestyle hotel in New Orleans that reflects his European background (Claridge's in London and Excelsior Hotel in Cologne, Germany) and showcases his commitment to personal service.
The Hotel Modern New Orleans will offer an array of cultural amenities such as thoughtfully curated books in every room and the absence of a check-in desk, allowing guests to be greeted and escorted to their rooms just as if they were staying at a friend's guesthouse. The 135 comfortable rooms were designed in-house with a modern eclectic aesthetic that mirrors the city's juxtaposition of Old World charm with New World diversity. Each room features a spacious layout and selection of furniture to fit the needs of busy travelers, yet also has a distinct style with decorative antiques throughout.
"Being from Europe, I have always loved New Orleans and its Old World influences. I am looking forward to opening a hotel here that is inspired by the city's vibrant culture," says Ortlieb. "We want to welcome visitors and locals alike with a variety of amenities and a special attention to service and hospitality."
The Hotel Modern New Orleans will also feature a new 70-seat restaurant with an outdoor courtyard. Dominique Macquet of Dominique's is engaged to develop the menu and space as well as the operation in partnership with the hotel. There are also plans for a cocktail lounge that will host a variety of nightlife events such as burlesque shows and a concert series with international and local artists. Neal Bodenheimer, Kirk Estopinal and Matthew Kohnke from Cure will design the cocktail list.
