In August of 1945, the Soviet Union invaded Japanese Manchukuo. At Japanese compound Unit 731, hordes of rats - carrying bubonic plague-infested fleas, were released from their cages. Soon after, the Black Death entered nearby Harbin and Pingfan. Prisoners at 731, some intentionally exposed to plague, were slaughtered; and the compound burned, to erase these and other horrors.
