New Orleans Auction Galleries to Celebrate Grand Reopening Under New Ownership, Nov. 29
More Than 1,700 Lots To Be Auctioned, Nov. 30 - Dec. 2

(NEW ORLEANS, LA) - Nov. 15, 2012 - New Orleans Auction Galleries will celebrate a new chapter at a festive grand reopening preview reception to be held on Thursday, Nov. 29, followed by a three-day auction Nov. 30-Dec. 2.

The grand reopening preview reception, taking place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., will feature special guest Joanne King Herring, global political activist, international socialite, former Texas television anchor and founder of the Marshall Plan for Afghanistan. Herring, known for her incredible fight with the Mujahedeen against the former Soviet Union, was played by Julia Roberts in the film "Charlie Wilson's War." Herring also has items up for auction in the three-day event.

More than 1,700 lots are slated for this auction, including fine antiques, paintings, estate jewelry and more. The auction will take place over a period of three days, as follows:

  • Friday, Nov. 30, 1 p.m.
  • Saturday, Dec. 1, 10 a.m.
  • Sunday, Dec. 2, 11 a.m.

Guests are welcome to view the exhibition lots at the Gallery, located at 510 Julia Street, Nov. 17 - 30, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. excluding Nov. 18, 22 and 25.

"Having the opportunity to invite our loyal consigners and patrons to celebrate a new chapter for New Orleans Auction Galleries is a wonderful thing," said New Orleans Auction Galleries CEO and owner, Susan D. Krohn. "We are so pleased that Joanne is joining us in this celebration of the arts. Her influence has crossed cultural barriers and created change in some of the world's farthest corners - we are thrilled to have her share her joie de vivre with us."

Businesswoman Susan D. Krohn, owner of Cakebread Art Antiques Collectibles, purchased the assets of New Orleans Auction Galleries this summer. The celebration will be a grand event with more than 1,700 auction items on display, including:

  • A Monograph of the Trochilidae by John Gould (British, 1804-1881). Volume V, published by the author, London 1861, containing 76 hand-colored lithographs with later three-quarter leather binding with gilt tooling. Gould was a British ornithologist and artist who served as official taxidermist to King George IV and established himself as Queen Victoria's favorite illustrator of birds.
  • A collection of fine estate jewelry, featuring an Art Deco platinum, white gold and diamond pendant;, a platinum and diamond bow brooch; a platinum, diamond and sapphire bracelet; an 18 karat white gold and pave diamond lizard pin; and a yellow gold hand assembled diamond and pearl brooch.
  • A rare Chinese scholar's porcelain desk set, Hung Hsien mark (1915-1916) and a nine piece set consisting of a brush pot, seal paste box, brush rest, ink stone, brush washer, water coupe, incense burner, paper weight and ink rest, all finely painted in sepia with slight color with scholars and landscapes. All contained in a fitted box, also with a pillow with an embroidered monogram of Elizabeth II.
  • Fine French empire gilt and patinated-bronze figural mantle clock, first quarter 19th century. The face with the plaque "Robin 11th Du Roi & De La Dauphine", depicting Psyche leaning against a crag, a butterfly perched on her shoulder, the rock centered by a gilt face with an ovoid maker's plaque. Robert Robin was the greatest French horologist of the late 18th century, clockmaker to Louis XVI. Two of his sons became clockmakers of comparable skill, Nicholas-Robert and Jean-Joseph Robert. The present clock is likely from the latter's shop.

Founded in 1991, New Orleans Auction Galleries is located in the heart of New Orleans' Historic Arts District. Recognized as the premier auction house in the American South, New Orleans Auction Galleries is devoted to providing fine 19th and 20th century paintings, estate jewelry and decorative arts to the southern U.S. region, as well as around the world.
