Starlight Racing Kicks off Dec. 28 with College Night

  • Music by DJ Soul Sister and Category 6
  • Four $1,000 Scholarship Giveaways and Free T-Shirts for College Students

NEW ORLEANS (Friday, Dec. 21, 2012) - The legendary DJ Soul Sister and popular party band Category 6 will supply the soundtrack to a night of racing under the lights when Starlight Racing returns to Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots on December 28. The first of seven Starlight dates over the final 14 weeks of the season doubles as College Night, with four $1,000 scholarships to be raffled off and free Starlight Racing long-sleeve T-shirts to the first 100 students to enter. First post is 5 p.m.

Soul Sister will spin in the trackside Miller Time Beer Garden starting at 6 p.m., while Category 6 will rock the Clubhouse stage beginning at 7 p.m. Racing will continue until just before 10 p.m. and the music will go on for at least another hour after that.

The $1,000 scholarship giveaways, courtesy of Fair Grounds and the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association, are open to any full-time student currently enrolled at an accredited institution of higher education. To enter the drawing, students should visit the first-floor of the Grandstand on the west side (up the stretch, near the Miller Time Beer Garden) and need to present both a valid government-issued photo ID and a valid student ID. Drawings will be held after the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth races.

Each scholarship winner will have $1,000 deposited directly into their tuition account and will have their photo taken as part of a Winner's Circle presentation.

The first 100 students who register for the scholarship drawing will receive a free Starlight Racing long-sleeve T-shirt courtesy of Faux Pas Printing and Bruno's Tavern.

Starlight Racing also means some of the best street fare from around the city. Check the Starlight Racing page at Facebook.com/StarlightRacing the week of the event to find out which food trucks and pop-up vendors will be present.

The Miller Time Beer Garden is always restricted to guests 21 and up. The Grandstand and Clubhouse are open to guests 18 and up, as well as minors accompanied by a parent or guardian. The adjacent Fair Grounds Slots facility is restricted to guests 21 and up.
