Fossil Fueled - Art Opening

Vehicle Art Show Rolls On New Orleans

May 25, 2013 - 7 to 10 pm

New Orleans, Louisiana - May 6, 2013

Brent Houzenga, a New Orleans-based artist, is excited to unveil his new collection of painted vehicles entitled Fossil Fueled, on May 25th at The Shed - 1512 Carondelet St. Along with the customized vehicles: three motorcycles, six mopeds, a Spec Miata race car and a minivan, Houzenga will reveal his new series of paintings called Occult Following at the Uptown art show. Brent Houzenga's distinctive colorful, stencil graffiti-inspired style translates well to the vehicles and his new paintings on wood and other found objects will mark another milestone in his creative evolution.

Fossil Fueled was born out of a commission to paint Dave Quinlan's Mazda Miata race car. Quinlan, a local motor enthusiast who works in the movie industry, was amazed by the transformation of his Miata and suggested that Houzenga do a whole automotive-based show. Quinlan then donated three motorcycles and a moped. Add to that an assortment of mopeds donated by the Irish Channel moped clan MONO,and it equals quite a showing.

On the surface, the show title Fossil Fueled harkens to the fact that these are all gas powered vehicles. Dig a layer deeper and the name pays homage to the fact that for the past 7 years Houzenga has been painting ethereal abstract portraits of people found in an 1890's photo albums (individuals who are long gone and now fossils).

One of Houzenga's previous painted scooters was featured on the cover of Scoot Magazine, the definitive scooter publication in the U.S. His art has graced the walls of some of the top galleries in cites including Chicago, Kansas City, D.C., Portland, Los Angeles, Austin, Miami, and New Orleans. Houzenga was recently commissioned to paint a piece for Matthew McConaughey's personal collection. Houzenga's work has been featured in publications such as Time Out ChicagoArt and Art Galleries of The South, as well as the Rizzoli book Stickers: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art and is the subject of documentary Brent Houzenga: Hybrid Pioneer.

The Fossil Fueled show will also feature a film showing Houzenga in the process of painting the vehicles and pieces.
