FRENCH MARKET CREOLE TOMATO FESTIVAL

(May 8, 2013-New Orleans, Louisiana)---The French Market plays host to its 27th annual Creole Tomato Festival the second weekend in June with fresh Creole tomatoes for sale, live music, cooking demonstrations, children's activities, Creole-tomato eating contests and free samples, plus plenty of tasty Creole tomato dishes at French Market District restaurants, Farmers Market eateries, and festival food booths.  

Strolling costumed tomatoes will be handing out free tomato fans, free tomato samples will be offered at stands throughout the District, and air conditioned retail shops, cafés, and restaurants from the Upper Pontalba to the Decatur Street colonnade will be open both days. Customers who purchase $30 of items at any French Market District retail shop during the festival will receive a complimentary box of Creole tomatoes while supplies last.  Convenient festival parking can be found in the French Market's convenient riverside parking lot just behind retail shops on Decatur Street, and nearby lots on Esplanade and Elysian Fields; the riverfront streetcar also makes three stops in the French Market District (#1,#2, #3).

Announcing a new partnership with CAPS FOR KIDS!

COOL  KIDS  ZONE in Dutch Alley     
The French Market is pleased and proud to partner this year with Caps for Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving hats autographed by athletes, celebrities and other notables to children, adolescents and young adults who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Caps for Kids was founded in New Orleans in 1993 at Children's Hospital.  Families can indulge in the Dutch Alley "CAPS FOR KIDS COOL KIDS ZONE" with miniature golf, misting stations, indoor/outdoor live music, circus arts and drumming workshops, face painting, balloon art, and interactive craft booths. Cool Kids Zone food and drink concessions will be operated by "Caps for Kids" volunteers, with all concession proceeds benefitting Caps for Kids.

On Saturday, June 8th, the main music stage at Ursulines & North Peters near the French Market arch will feature a Cajun-Zydeco performance lineup coordinated by the neighboring Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco  Festival, happening the same weekend at the Old U.S. Mint. On Sunday, there will be brass bands every hour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. moving throughout the French Market, with the main music stage at Ursulines hosted by 98.5 WYLD's Adrian Long with live local R&B music, dance lessons, and raffles on Sunday, June 9th.  

Enjoy Creole tomato cooking demos, samples, and eating contests at the Farmers Market all day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, featuring demonstrations by chefs from Muriel's Jackson Square, Nola Locavores, New Orleans School of Cooking, Café B, Cupcake Fairies, Nola Truck & Convi Collective, and more.  Festival food booths will line the outside of the Farmers Market and feature fresh Creole tomato salads, crepes, and traditional festival food enhanced with or including Creole tomatoes (a requirement for all visiting food vendors).  Local artists from French Market District shops and the Farmers and Flea Markets will be out in full force throughout the entire weekend, offering everything from paintings and pottery to jewelry and handmade journals, candles, soaps, and decorative arts.  Visitors who have not frequented the market in recent months will be pleasantly overwhelmed by the new array of arts and crafts vendors, daily Farmers Market vendors and Farmers Market cafés to choose from.
