New Orleans Named Top Destination for Labor Day Weekend

New Orleans Named a Top Destination for Labor Day  
Leading travel sites recognize New Orleans as a premier leisure travel destination for Labor Day Weekend

 

NEW ORLEANS - Aug. 30, 2013 - With 34 million Americans expected to travel for the upcoming Labor Day weekend, New Orleans has been named a top Labor Day destination by two of the country's leading leisure travel websites, Orbitz and Priceline.com. The city was ranked among the top 10 in both sites' listings.

Priceline released its Top 50 Labor Day destinations and New Orleans' French Quarter is ranked the 10th most popular spot for the weekend. Priceline.com's list is based on more than 30,000 credit card-backed hotel room bookings made on the site's "Name Your Own Price®" hotel service for the upcoming holiday.  Priceline began issuing its rankings in 2003, and over the last 10 years New Orleans is the country's eighth most popular Labor Day destination.

Orbitz ranks New Orleans number nine on its Labor Day index, noting that the city is one of only two in the top 10 that has seen a decrease over 2012 in average daily airfare prices. The Orbitz ranking is based on actual bookings to the destination city through the company's website.

"These rankings are further proof that New Orleans is one of the best destinations on the planet and that our city is building back stronger than before," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "It's a testament to the thousands of our citizens working behind the scenes every day to make sure visitors have the most vibrant, authentic and culturally rich experience that any city has to offer."

"While New Orleans will always be a top destination for major events, these rankings show that the city is also a perfect place for a weekend getaway," said Stephen Perry, President and CEO of the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Labor Day travelers know that while they can always find some of the world's best music and an unmatched culinary experience, there are also many attractions and activities here for the entire family."

In addition to our beautiful weather, visitors will find in every neighborhood, the authenticity that makes this city so unique."

Travel experts cited New Orleans' affordability, along with its large number of both outdoor and indoor activities. The major festival Southern Decadence also routinely draws more than 100,000 visitors to the city over the Labor Day weekend.
