New Orleans' First DMC and Creative Tourism Personality Merge

Custom Conventions founded by Carling Dinkler, "Father" of the modern Destination Management Industry, incorporates Tailored Tours, founded by Morgan Molthrop, who is reshaping the city's ‘story' for a new generation.

 

The city's first major turnkey events and group planner, Carling Dinkler, founder of Custom Conventions, acquired Tailored Tours today for an undisclosed amount. "By encompassing Tailored Tours into Custom Conventions," said Mr. Dinkler, "we combine the experience of a management team that has hosted international events of 80,00 people with the talent of a tourism expert who consulted for the Walt Disney Company."

"Most groups that visit New Orleans take a tour," says Molthrop, a New Orleans native who was named a "Person to Watch in 2013" by New Orleans Magazine. "The CVB estimates the number of visitors from New York, Illinois, California and Massachusetts will increase, as will the number of international tourists. Tailored Tours helps interpret the city's rich, diverse history in a way that does not sidestep important issues like the journey to freedom by enslaved Africans and the environmental issues surrounding our endangered wetlands."

Not immune to controversy, Molthrop started Tailored Tours with a "No Hoop Skirts" logo, challenging the status quo of the market he returned to find in New Orleans. "I do not see creativity and controversy at cross purposes," he says.

Mr. Dinkler, who was known for challenging the status quo as he rose the ranks as a local entrepreneur, now has a ‘Digital Rolodex' including influential national and local politicos. He started his career in high school while working for his parents' hotel chain, owners of the iconic St. Charles Hotel. Later he bought Gray Line Tours, revamped it, then sold it to open Custom Conventions. He earned the contract to run the GOP's national convention when it came to New Orleans.
