SOUTHERN REP TO PRODUCE BROOMSTICK BY JOHN BIGUENET

RACHEL GORMAN, MARKETING AND DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

THEATRE NEWS * * * FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

For more information please contact:  pr@southernrep.com

NEW ORLEANS (December 12, 2013)--As a part of its longstanding commitment to developing, producing, and championing new work, Southern Rep will produce the Regional Premiere of BROOMSTICK by John Biguenet in New Orleans in October 2014.

Written and developed over a period of four years, BROOMSTICK is a one-woman play about an old crone who recounts her life's story from her home in a remote cabin deep in the Appalachian Mountains. As her life's story unfolds, the audience is taken on a journey down the shadowy path between the real and the imagined. Equal parts clever, frightening, and wickedly funny, BROOMSTICK treads the sometimes-narrow line that divides good and evil, the powerful and the weak, and childhood nightmares and adulthood worry.

"We are so thrilled to work with John Biguenet again after completing his successful Rising Water Trilogy: RISING WATER, SHOTGUN, and MOLD. BROOMSTICK is an incredibly dynamic look at how we grapple with our life's choices as we age and why we defend them, even when faced with their negative consequences." -       Aimée Hayes, Producing Artistic Director

Directed by Mark Routhier, BROOMSTICK's production in New Orleans will star Liann Pattison and represent a homecoming for playwright John Biguenet. The winner of the National New Play Network's Continued Life of New Plays Fund, BROOMSTICK's Rolling World Premiere partners include New Jersey Rep, Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, Montana Rep, and Southern Rep. Southern Rep's production will first tour to Acting Unlimited in Lafayette, LA, June 6 -15, with a fall opening in New Orleans. BROOMSTICK was developed at the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, the Portland Stage Festival of New Plays, the Forum Reading Series of New Plays Theatre, and Playfest! at the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre.

A workshop of Southern Rep's production of BROOMSTICK with playwright John Biguenet, director Mark Routhier and star Liann Pattison is planned for December, 2013.

ABOUT SOUTHERN REP:

Southern Rep Theatre is in its 27th season as the region's preeminent professional theatre, producing bold world and regional premieres under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director, Aimée Hayes.  Southern Rep's Mainstage Season also includes the best of Broadway, off-Broadway and classic plays, and it's Lagniappe Series DEBAUCHERY!, 6x6, 3x3, and Pints and Plays reflect the company's ongoing commitment to new play development. Southern Rep's innovative "school to stage" arts education programs, YONOLA and AcademySRT, serve as a pipeline for New Orleans' students and youth interested in pursuing their creative ambitions, and The Ruby Prize, a new play award (named in honor of civil rights veteran Ruby Bridges that honors women of color playwrights) supports a more diverse theatre community. This year's Mainstage Season is presented "on the road," with each production presented at a different venue to offer a more all-engrossing event experience for audience members. It includes 33 VARIATIONS at the Contemporary Arts Center, PRIDE & PREJUDICE at Ursuline Academy, the National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere of THE TOTALITARIANS at Mid-City Theatre, and THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA at Art Klub.  www.southernrep.com
