New Orleans aids victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan with musical fundraiser at Rock ‘N’ Bowl on Feb. 9th

NOLA loves the Philippines

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Orleans aids victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan with musical fundraiser at Rock ‘N' Bowl on Feb. 9th

NEW ORLEANS, La. (January 22, 2014) - An upcoming fundraiser has been organized to help support Filipino fishermen in the town of Estancia, whose livelihoods were destroyed by the loss or damage of their fishing boats from Super Typhoon Haiyan on November 8th, 2013. The fundraiser will take place at Rock ‘N' Bowl in New Orleans on February 9th, 2014, from 5:00PM to 9:00PM with a goal of raising enough money to donate at least fifty (50) fishing boats or fishing corrals to the people.

The idea for the fundraiser was conceived by a group of friends, William & Tiki McIntyre, Kevin & Sandy Brown, and Dave & Ella Delio, who were discussing the devastation during a weekly conference call. Ella, a resident of New Orleans who is originally from the Philippines, told the group that she was distraught over the loss of lives and property that was happening in her homeland. Dave & Ella saw the destruction firsthand when they visited Estancia last December and met with community leaders & local fishermen. "The devastation was utterly heartbreaking. But, various friends from New Orleans immediately expressed their desire to help raise funds for the Philippines. They knew what I was going through because of their own experience with local disasters. The response has been heartwarming," Ella Delio commented.

The group banded together and "NOLA Loves the Philippines" was born. Rock ‘N' Bowl owner John Blancher generously donated space for the event with other community members helping out by becoming sponsors, donating auction and raffle items, and volunteering their time.

Many community leaders and local celebrities have also shown their support. Honorary Chairpersons for the event include sports commentator and former Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert Jr., radio talk show host Angela Hill, Grammy award winning soul artist Irma Thomas and WWL TV field reporter Monica Hernandez. Honorary Committee Members include New Orleans Councilmembers Susan Guidry and Kristen G. Palmer, Louisiana State Representative (District 98) Neil C. Abramson and Lions Club International Vice District Governor (District 8-S) Robert Romero.

Entertainment includes performances by John Papa Gros, James Andrews & The Crescent City All Stars, The Bucktown All-Stars, Bone Tone Brass Band, Pussyfooters and members of the New Orleans Opera.

Advance tickets are available for $25 and can be purchased by visiting nolalovesthephilippines.org Tickets the night of the event can be purchased at the door for $30. Student discounts are available and kids under 12 will receive free admission. Visit nolalovesthephilippines.org or www.facebook.com/NOLAlovesthePhilippines to learn more.
