Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans and CultureConnect Launch New Mobile App

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans and CultureConnect Launch New Mobile App

"Jazz Houses: Where They Lived" app brings jazz history to life just in time for Jazz Fest

To download the "Jazz Houses: Where They Lived" app, visit bit.do/jazzhouses or text "Jazz" to 99000 from your mobile phone or tablet.

New Orleans, LA (April 30, 2014) - While enjoying jazz artists of the present at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, tap into local jazz greats of the past with Preservation Resource Center's (PRC) new "Jazz Houses: Where They Lived" mobile app, created by CultureConnect.

This new mobile app highlights PRC's Jazz Plaque Program, which features the former homes of over 60 important and influential jazz musicians throughout the Greater New Orleans Area. The app brings PRC's Jazz Plaque Program to life by combining historical photographs, clips of jazz music and information about the artists and homes into a virtual tour of New Orleans jazz houses and historic neighborhoods. Some of the homes featured on the app include JellyRoll Morton, Jo King Oliver and Louis Armstrong's boyhood home, among many others.

By associating early jazz musicians with the spaces in which they lived, PRC's new mobile app, "Jazz Houses: Where They Lived," seeks to connect new audiences to the rich musical heritage of New Orleans in a more personal way, while encouraging buyers to invest in older neighborhoods, saving endangered buildings and stimulating neighborhood pride.

"Our new app brings history to life, said Blaum. "It mixes images of the musicians and neighborhoods, historical and modern photos of the houses, and music clips to weave a seamless narrative around our city's historic homes and the jazz greats who once inhabited them."

PRC developed this app with Culture Connect - a New Orleans-based technology company that specializes in bringing mobile applications to museums and cultural institutions. Co-founders of CultureConnect, Samantha Diamond and Monika Smyczek, believe mobile technology is a powerful way to engage new audiences with the Jazz Plaque Program.

"We saw a huge opportunity to bring the Jazz Plaque Program to life," said Diamond. "By using mobile technology, we helped the PRC surface their incredibly rich archives and tell the story of these legendary Jazz musicians in a radically new way. The app has already had over 500 visits, and almost half were from outside Louisiana - we're proud to deliver on our mission to bring the PRC's content to new audiences."

Dr. Jack Stewart led the PRC research and wrote the musician narratives, which are displayed on the plaques and in the app. Additional Images used in the app have been provided courtesy of the New Orleans Jazz Club Collection at the LA State Museum, the Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University, and The Historic New Orleans Collection. Music clips from early musicians are made available by the GHB Jazz Foundation.
