The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Celebrates 120th Anniversary and Fifth Year Since Its Historic Restoration
Celebration Starts May 1 and Continues Through Year-End 2014 with Dining, Dancing, Cocktails, Music and Relaxation
NEW ORLEANS - May 1, 2014 - Starting May 1, The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, will celebrate its founding 120 years ago and its historic restoration five years ago, with all events lasting through the end of 2014, including a salute to its 2009 restoration on June 25.
Among historic locations where locals and visitors will pay tribute to the legendary hotel during its anniversary are the Blue Room, known for decades for its dining, dancing, entertainment and family memories; the Sazerac Bar, home of the world-famous Sazerac cocktail; and the Fountain Lounge, recently re-introduced to New Orleans as the place where the hip, sociable and fashionable meet to enjoy cocktails and small plates.
The Waldorf Astoria Spa also will take part in the Roosevelt's coinciding 120th and fifth anniversary with special pricing of its signature services, while the Emporium Gift Shop will welcome local authors and writers who are fans of New Orleans by hosting the Roosevelt's ever-popular book signings.
Whether it's politicians or royalty, the Roosevelt has greeted them all - such as U.S. presidents Calvin Coolidge, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton; Her Royal Highness Charlotte, the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy.
Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe and others have dined, been wined or been hosted at the iconic hotel. Marlene Dietrich was among the cavalcade of performers appearing at the Blue Room - in her case, near the end of a lengthy career in 1975 and requesting oxygen between songs.
Of course, one of the hotel's most frequent visitors - and a strong admirer too - was La. Gov. Huey P. Long, the "Kingfish," who had a suite of his own.
"The Roosevelt is fond of celebration, because it speaks to the heart of this remarkable city," said Tod Chambers, general manager. "The timing of the 120 anniversary of the hotel's opening and the fifth anniversary of its re-opening as a Waldorf Astoria property gives us a unique opportunity to tell the world how proud we are to be the crown jewel of New Orleans luxury."
Following is a complete list of the venues, events and outreach that will make up the Roosevelt's dual-anniversary celebrations through the rest of 2014:
