On December 20, 1803, the Louisiana Purchase was signed, confirming the transfer of the former French colony to the United States. Statehood, however, was not immediate. For nearly 10 years, Louisiana was entrenched in a turbulent period, rife with political disputes and culture clashes. The exhibition Between Colony & State: Louisiana in the Territorial Period, 1803-1812, and its companion online component, examines the people, places, and events that shaped this fascinating period.   Come join us at The Museum of Art Opening Reception for the William Woodward Exhibition.  Drawing from the holdings of both institutions, the exhibition features more than 70 paintings, etchings, sculpture and ephemera related to Woodward's life and works. A native of Massachusetts, Woodward came to New Orleans in the 1880s to teach fine arts, mechanical drawing and architectural drawing at Tulane University.

Woodward was involved with every facet of architecture in New Orleans, consulting on the design of Tulane's new building for architecture classes. He also designed and built his own home in Uptown New Orleans. His interest in architecture evolved into a passionate commitment to preservation. The first artist to focus intensely on the Vieux Carré, Woodward documented the Quarter's rich cultural heritage in vignettes of daily life-women at market, street cleaners, deliverymen and milkmaids driving drayage carts and residents engaged in their daily activities.

Woodward's depictions of French Quarter buildings focused public attention on the heedless destruction of historic properties. The exhibition offers an opportunity to view a large selection of Woodward's renderings of the French Quarter and to judge the strength of his artistic contribution.

Make a new holiday memory this year at Le Petit Theatre with Irving Berlin’s beloved musical “White Christmas,” a show the whole family will love, running December 4 – 20. New Orleans’ newest holiday experience will include not-to-be-missed decorations and visits from Santa at every matinee. And, just in case New Orleans gets a warm December, there’s a guarantee of snow inside the theatre.

A glorious stage adaptation of the beloved, timeless film, this heartwarming musical features 17 Irving Berlin standards to tell the story of two World War II veterans whose successful song and dance act (and eyes for two beautiful singing sisters) leads them to a picturesque Vermont Inn – which just happens to be owned by their former army commander – to stage a winter show. Presented originally on Broadway last year to sold-out audiences, the uplifting story is a merry and bright theatrical experience full of dancing, laughter and some of the greatest songs ever written.

The dazzling score features well-known standards such as “Blue Skies,” “I Love A Piano,” “How Deep Is the Ocean” and the perennial favorite, “White Christmas.” Le Petit’s 25-member cast features five local talents who have gone on to regional and New York theater careers: Brandt Blocker (Director), Rich Arnold (Phil Davis), Ashley Lemmler (Betty Haynes), Kasey Marino (Bob Wallace) and Julie Tolivar (Judy Haynes). Arnold – whose “White Christmas” role was performed by Danny Kaye in the film – appeared at Le Petit last year as Rich in “Cabaret.” While in New York, he has performed with the Broadway tour and Moscow companies of 42nd Street. Lemmler – who takes on Rosemary Clooney’s role – is widely known across the region.

Most recently at Le Petit, she was seen as Amalia in “She Loves Me,” Nellie in “Summer and Smoke,” and the soprano in the vocal quartet in “City of Angels.” She’s a frequent performer on the New Orleans music scene, including jazz solo spots at Harrah’s and the Ritz Carlton Hotel. Marino – stepping into Bing Crosby’s film role – was seen this past summer in Tulane Summer Lyric’s production of “Company” as Robert. He was featured in the closing company of “Hairspray” on Broadway and is currently working on several Broadway-bound projects. Tolivar – whose slot was originally filled by Vera-Ellen – understudied and played Truly Scrumptious opposite Raul Esparza in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” on Broadway, and understudied Tony-award winning actress Karen Ziemba in the role of Georgia Hendrix in the Tony-winner “Curtains” on Broadway. She won the 2008 Kevin Kline Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Polly in “Crazy for You” at Stages St. Louis. Because of the added demand for tickets, Saturday matinees have been added to regular performances on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees.

The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) is proud to participate in "¡Sí Cuba!" a major citywide presentation of arts, music, and culture related to Cuba taking place in New Orleans January through April 2010. ¡Sí Cuba! is a collaborative venture between museums, universities, galleries, and other arts organizations in New Orleans, co-organized by NOMA, Newcomb Art Gallery, and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University. NOMA's participation in ¡Sí Cuba! includes two exhibitions: Luis Cruz Azaceta: Swimming to Havana, a solo exhibition of paintings and Polaridad Complementaria: Recent Works from Cuba, a traveling show organized by the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, Havana. Polaridad Complementaria will be co-presented at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University.

The solo exhibition Luis Cruz Azaceta: Swimming to Havana will feature a suite of new paintings, all from 2009. The phrase "Swimming to Havana" proposes the impossible as no unassisted human is capable of traversing ninety miles across the Caribbean Sea from Florida to Cuba. Yet it is a journey said to have taken place countless of times in the minds of Cubans wishing to reach the United States, and Cuban immigrants dreaming of returning home. In his suite of new paintings, Azaceta invites viewers to undertake their own imaginative journeys through his imagery. These paintings explore the idea of "crossing over" in myriad ways: between abstraction and figuration, between geometric and organic forms, between Cuban and American culture, and between the historically linked cities of New Orleans and Havana.
