AARP Louisiana invites Carrollton residents and other New Orleanians for a “Walk in the Park” this Saturday to celebrate healthy living with well known local musicians and chefs. Attendees will receive pedometers to measure the distances they walk while strolling through the park and walking at home. Free health screenings and information will be provided by AARP and community organizations, including Daughters of Charity. Booths with give-a-ways and publications will line the sidewalks of Palmer Park. Music will be presented throughout the Walk by Charmaine Neville, David Batiste, Jr., The Free Agents Brass Band, The Pigeon Town Steppers, Reverend Lois Dejean and Ronald Robinson and the Second Edition. Food vendors will feature local cuisine including healthy soul food from LCD Catering, a fresh barbeque showcase with former White House Master Chef Ronnie Seaton, and healthy choices from Robert's Fresh Market, Lebanon's Cafe, and the Hollygrove Farm and Market. AARP offers this free event in honor of Ayana McHenry, a 36-year old African American woman who died earlier this year from a heart attack. Ms McHenry was a volunteer with AARP’s Futures Council, a group of young professionals dedicated to improving health in Louisiana. She worked as a development officer at Southern University.

Japan Fest, the largest annual celebration of Japanese culture in the Gulf South, returns to the New Orleans Museum of Art for a full day of traditional music, dancing and martial arts demonstrations, plus food, games, crafts and more spread throughout the Museum and the adjacent Dreyfous Meadow in City Park. Like all current exhibitions and public programs, Japan Fest is through the generosity of The Helis Foundation. All outdoor Japan Fest activities are free to everyone. The crowd-pleasing Kaminari Taiko of Houston return with their massive drumming demonstration as headliners of this year's Japan Fest. Other highlights include numerous demonstrations of traditional Japanese arts, the Japan Club's annual tea ceremony demonstrations and a raffle with prizes including one roundtrip airline ticket to Japan, courtesy of Continental Airlines. Patrons will enjoy tours of the Japanese Gallery starting at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Inside NOMA attendees will find Japanese swords display, calligraphy, craft sales, Anime short films and more.

Styles of art include Painting, Photography, Ceramics, Glass, Jewelry, Wood, and Printmaking, plus handmade clothing, soap, candles, and other delights. Between 50 and 100 artists display and sell their wares each month. The Arts Market also features live entertainment, food and beverage booths, and a children's activities area.

The second annual Treme Creole Gumbo Festival celebrates the history of Faubourg Treme as a hotbed of New Orleans musical and culinary culture. The festival takes place Saturday, Dec. 12, in the parking lot of the new Jazz & Heritage Center (formerly the Tharp-Sontheimer-Laudumiey Funeral Home) at 1225 N. Rampart Street. Admission is free. Locally made wearable art, jewelry and fine crafts for the home will be featured in the festival's Arts & Crafts Market. Commemorate French Independence Day with French-themed food and activities. This year's celebration will begin on Saturday at Esplanade Avenue’s Faubourg St; John merchants (between Ponce de Leon Street and Esplanade’s 3100 Block). They invite you to enjoy live music from Vavavoom and the String Beans, play the French game pétanque at Fortier Park (across Esplanade from Café Degas), participate in the many children’s activities planned, and enjoy the food and drink. Admission is free.
.The Alliance française of New Orleans will be hosting a dinner (wine included) at Café Degas with the live music. In addition, a Mass in French will be celebrated at Saint Louis Cathedral.
Also, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony, organized by the Conseil des Sociétés Françaises will take place at the Jeanne d’Arc statue at Place de France on Decatur Street. Refreshments afterward at the Market Café.
