The festival brings together a mix of jazz, hip-hop, r&b, gospel, folk, reggae, along with theater and dance. Holiday on the Boulevards events will occur on Saturday, December 5, and Sunday, December 6, 2009 at Ashe which is located at 1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., and at GoodWork Network, 1824 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. One of the highlights of the festival is when Ashes holiday icons, Mama YeYe & Baba Kwanzaa, meet Santa & Mrs. Claus. Led by a brass band, the couples second line from GoodWork Network to Ash where they are met by festival participants who join in the second line. Voices Not Forgotten, another feature not to be missed, spotlights the senior citizens (ages 62 to 94) from the Central City Senior Center. These ladies and gentlemen infuse oral histories, backed by videography, into their song-and-dance routines and are known for not only packing the house, but bringing it down with a foot-stomping audience that always begs for more. The festival also includes a marketplace which gives festival-goers the opportunity to purchase gifts from local merchants and artisans, and enjoy food prepared by local vendors. Good Work Networks Youth Marketplace will feature youth, ages 7-21, who have participated in entrepreneurship training provided by GoodWork Network. The training culminates with real-world selling on December 5, at Holiday on the Blvd. Along with other young people, they will sell affordable food items and hand-made holiday gifts. Participating youth groups include LA Green Corps, Alpha Coffee House, Sojourner Truth Community Center, and Cafe Reconcile. This event will also include Tommy the Clown and His Krump Dancers from the Movie “Rize.

PLUS the fourth annual Jazz & Heritage Holiday Bazaar, where you can find official Jazz Fest t-shirts, handmade jewelry, home furnishings and more. Chef Leah Chase and others will demonstrate gumbo cooking techniques and recipes. Eat, dance and do your holiday shopping all at once! Music, food and holiday shopping combine for a fun winter weekend at the second annual Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival. This free event, presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, takes place Saturday, December 12, and Sunday, December 13, at the Jazz & Heritage Center, located at 1225 North Rampart Street. Performers on Dec. 12 include Kermit Ruffins – who is not only one of New Orleans’ favorite trumpeters, but he’s also a featured character on the now-filming HBO drama “Tremé.” His latest album is called “Livin’ a Tremé Life.” Also appearing on Dec. 12 are Shamarr Allen, the Joe Krown Organ Trio featuring Walter “Wolfman” Washington and Russell Batiste and jazz combo Bleu Orleans. On Dec. 13, we present a “trifecta” of Tremé horn players from the Andrews family – Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and his band, Orleans Avenue, James “Twelve” Andrews & the Crescent City All-Stars and the Glen David Andrews band. Additional performers include jazz combo Bleu Orleans, the Imperial Quintet of New Orleans featuring Esquizito’s tribute to Danny Barker, and the students and faculty of both campuses of the Heritage School of Music. Of course, there will be great gumbo to sample in several varieties: okra, “kitchen sink filé,” Cajun with andouille sausage and a dark roux, and gumbo z’herbes. Our invited chefs – including Leah Chase of Dooky Chase Restaurant - will demonstrate their gumbo cooking techniques in special presentations twice each day, at noon and at 2:45 p.m. Don’t forget to shop for holiday gifts at the fourth annual Jazz & Heritage Holiday Bazaar. It’s the only place outside of Jazz Fest where you can get official festival t-shirts and other merchandise, plus a large assortment of CDs and locally produced, hand-made clothing, jewelry and home furnishings. At JAMFEST’09 students will walk in the footsteps of the giants of Jazz while discovering New Orleans, the city of its birth. Our goal is to provide the optimum experience for all performers and directors through cultural immersion and the wonder of learning through cooperation with Loyola Jazz Ensemble Festival, which is in its 40th year. All performances both competitive and non-competitive will be held at beautiful historic Loyola University. The Festival is open to big bands or Jazz combos from elementary through junior college level. Master classes will be held for all instruments on Thursday, March, 4th and Friday,5th, and will be taught by our guest artist, bassist and composer Rufus Reid and the Loyola jazz faculty. A panel of expert musician/educators will adjudicate and provide clinics immediately following each performance.

They arrive by auto, air, bus and train to come in for the spring event that features authentic Cajun cuisine. Boiled Crawfish with all the “fixins” & Crawfish Dishes such as Crawfish Bread, Crawfish Pasta, Crawfish Pies, Crawfish Rice, and Crawfish Jambalaya adorn the limelight while many other food booths tickle just about everyone’s pallet. Cajun entertainment and current hit parade bands explode on stage to draw crowds to the sounds and glitter of showmanship. The entertainment committee assures that everyone attending will at some point enjoy the performances.
Thursdays and Fridays entice the listeners to prepare for the weekend filled musical finale on Sunday night. Arts and crafts lure hundreds to see real hand crafted products. Cups, plates, belts, straw hats, sun glasses, tennis visors, personalized home crafts, license plates and key chains are jus a few of the treasured values offered. There’s always a giant midway with carnival games, cotton candy, candied apples and rides to thrill the toddler through the roughneck and even the Ferris wheel for Maw Maw and Pawpaw. The awesome clinking on the tracks, the air brakes, the laughter amid the flashing lights with noisy horns and squealing sirens draw thousands to conquer their inhibitions. The weekend of festivities boasts proudly of its ability to reunite families, attract family reunions, spark new relationships and spread joy throughout the entire atmosphere. Balloons, toy animals, tee shirts, aprons, ball caps, and other memorabilia flood the festival with mementos to remind us that the next crawfish festival is in the horizon.
