Le Petit Theatre Presents - A "White Christmas" December 4, 2009 - December 20, 2009 |
Add to Itinerary |
Times: Friday 8:00 pm; Saturday 2:00 pm Matinee; Sunday 2:00 pm Matinee http://www.lepetittheatre.com Location: Le Petit Theatre, 616 Saint Peter Street Phone: (504) 522-2081 Admission: $25.00 - $62.00; student and group discounts are available Make a new holiday memory this year at Le Petit Theatre with Irving Berlin’s beloved musical “White Christmas,” a show the whole family will love, running December 4 – 20. New Orleans’ newest holiday experience will include not-to-be-missed decorations and visits from Santa at every matinee. And, just in case New Orleans gets a warm December, there’s a guarantee of snow inside the theatre. A glorious stage adaptation of the beloved, timeless film, this heartwarming musical features 17 Irving Berlin standards to tell the story of two World War II veterans whose successful song and dance act (and eyes for two beautiful singing sisters) leads them to a picturesque Vermont Inn – which just happens to be owned by their former army commander – to stage a winter show. Presented originally on Broadway last year to sold-out audiences, the uplifting story is a merry and bright theatrical experience full of dancing, laughter and some of the greatest songs ever written.
The dazzling score features well-known standards such as “Blue Skies,” “I Love A Piano,” “How Deep Is the Ocean” and the perennial favorite, “White Christmas.” Le Petit’s 25-member cast features five local talents who have gone on to regional and New York theater careers: Brandt Blocker (Director), Rich Arnold (Phil Davis), Ashley Lemmler (Betty Haynes), Kasey Marino (Bob Wallace) and Julie Tolivar (Judy Haynes). Arnold – whose “White Christmas” role was performed by Danny Kaye in the film – appeared at Le Petit last year as Rich in “Cabaret.” While in New York, he has performed with the Broadway tour and Moscow companies of 42nd Street. Lemmler – who takes on Rosemary Clooney’s role – is widely known across the region.
Most recently at Le Petit, she was seen as Amalia in “She Loves Me,” Nellie in “Summer and Smoke,” and the soprano in the vocal quartet in “City of Angels.” She’s a frequent performer on the New Orleans music scene, including jazz solo spots at Harrah’s and the Ritz Carlton Hotel. Marino – stepping into Bing Crosby’s film role – was seen this past summer in Tulane Summer Lyric’s production of “Company” as Robert. He was featured in the closing company of “Hairspray” on Broadway and is currently working on several Broadway-bound projects. Tolivar – whose slot was originally filled by Vera-Ellen – understudied and played Truly Scrumptious opposite Raul Esparza in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” on Broadway, and understudied Tony-award winning actress Karen Ziemba in the role of Georgia Hendrix in the Tony-winner “Curtains” on Broadway. She won the 2008 Kevin Kline Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Polly in “Crazy for You” at Stages St. Louis. Because of the added demand for tickets, Saturday matinees have been added to regular performances on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees.

Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem January 24, 2010 |
Add to Itinerary |
Times: 2:30 pm Location: Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts Phone: (504) 529-3000 The most operatic of all sacred works, the 1874 Requiem takes its rightful place in a season of treasures from the late Romantic period. The closing "Libera me" section was conceived in 1869 as part of a mass written by 13 different composers to honor Rossini after his death. That effort was abandoned, to Verdi's frustration, but five years later he resolved to bring a Requiem to completion as tribute to Alessandro Manzoni, the Italian poet, novelist and humanist. Verdi's admiration for the writer brought out his best - the music is infused with rhythmic vitality, sublime melodies and dramatic contrasts. He recycled a duet from Don Carlos and chose a quartet of singers from the European production of Aida for the Milan premiere, which he himself conducted. Join internationally known soloists from today's operatic stage, the New Orleans Opera Chorus, and choral groups from throughout our community for this special event.

NOBA Kicks Off Mardi Gras with Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo January 29, 2010 |
Add to Itinerary |
Times: 7:30 pm Location: Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts Phone: (504) 525-1052 Admission: $20.00 - $125.00; Students and seniors (65 and older) receive a $7 discount off the regular ticket prices of $40 and higher. Group discounts also are available For the first time since 1983, the lovable all-male company Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo will travel to New Orleans in January for a one-night only performance to kick off the Mardi Gras season. Affectionately known as the “Trocks,” the ballet troupe will take to the stage at the Mahalia Jackson Theater of Performing Arts. By blending a passion for classical ballet with an affectionate parody of great choreographers, The Trocks prove that hairy men in tutus and makeup can, indeed, dance on pointe without falling on their faces. The evening begins with their signature work, Le Lac Des Cygnes (Act II) of Swan Lake, as staged by Trutti Gasparineti after Lev Ivanov and set to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Also on the program is Patterns in Space, a modern work in the style of Merce Cunningham, and La Viviendere, a ballet set to music by Cesare Pugni that introduced the Polka of Bohemia to 19th -century London.
The Trocks close the performance with their variation on Marius Petipa’s classic French work Paquita, with music by Ludwig Minkus. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo was originally founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts who wanted to present a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form. The dancers adopt outrageous stage names, such as Ida Nevasayneva, Katarina Bychkova and Minnie Van Driver, and create outlandish back stories and alter egos to match. But a performance by the Trocks is more than just parody.

Mahalia Jackson Theatre for the Performing Arts Presents - Mama Mia! February 2, 2010 - February 7, 2010 |
Add to Itinerary |
http://www.mahaliajacksontheater.com Location: Mahalia Jackson Theater, in Armstrong Park at 801 N. Rampart Street, New Orleans, Louisiana Phone: (504) 287-0351 An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya - from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities. Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” MAMMA MIA! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

Times: 12:30 pm http://www.irishchannelno.org Location: Magazine and St. Charles The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade rolls down the lower section of Magazine Street and St. Charles Avenue. Marchers and riders in the parade will have plenty of green beads and doubloons and, if the visitor is really lucky, he or she might catch a coveted potato or head of cabbage. The tuxedo-clad marchers also hand out paper flowers in exchange for a kiss on the hand or cheek. Make sure you wear something green – with so many parade goers, the law of St. Paddy’s day attire is strictly enforced and if you don’t follow it, you may just get pinched. There is also a block party located at Annunciation Square, near Chippewa and Race Streets. Show up and you’ll find plenty of Irish music and dancers, food from local restaurants, arts and crafts booths, wine and beer. Off-street parking is available. All proceeds go to benefit St. Michael’s Special School.

He is condemned by the forces of darkness to sail until Judgment Day, unless he meets a woman willing to die in order to save him. Permitted to land only once every seven years to seek redemption, the Dutchman's ship docks in a Norwegian coastal town where he encounters Senta.
