On December 20, 1803, the Louisiana Purchase was signed, confirming the transfer of the former French colony to the United States. Statehood, however, was not immediate. The exhibition Between Colony & State: Louisiana in the Territorial Period, 1803-1812, and its companion online component, examines the people, places, and events that shaped this fascinating period.   Come join us at The Museum of Art Opening Reception for the William Woodward Exhibition.  Drawing from the holdings of both institutions, the exhibition features more than 70 paintings, etchings, sculpture and ephemera related to Woodward's life and works. A native of Massachusetts, Woodward came to New Orleans in the 1880s to teach fine arts, mechanical drawing and architectural drawing at Tulane University.

Woodward was involved with every facet of architecture in New Orleans, consulting on the design of Tulane's new building for architecture classes. He also designed and built his own home in Uptown New Orleans. His interest in architecture evolved into a passionate commitment to preservation. The first artist to focus intensely on the Vieux Carré, Woodward documented the Quarter's rich cultural heritage in vignettes of daily life-women at market, street cleaners, deliverymen and milkmaids driving drayage carts and residents engaged in their daily activities.

Woodward's depictions of French Quarter buildings focused public attention on the heedless destruction of historic properties. The exhibition offers an opportunity to view a large selection of Woodward's renderings of the French Quarter and to judge the strength of his artistic contribution.

The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) is proud to participate in "¡Sí Cuba!" a major citywide presentation of arts, music, and culture related to Cuba taking place in New Orleans January through April 2010. ¡Sí Cuba! is a collaborative venture between museums, universities, galleries, and other arts organizations in New Orleans, co-organized by NOMA, Newcomb Art Gallery, and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University. NOMA's participation in ¡Sí Cuba! includes two exhibitions: Luis Cruz Azaceta: Swimming to Havana, a solo exhibition of paintings and Polaridad Complementaria: Recent Works from Cuba, a traveling show organized by the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, Havana. Polaridad Complementaria will be co-presented at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University.

The solo exhibition Luis Cruz Azaceta: Swimming to Havana will feature a suite of new paintings, all from 2009. The phrase "Swimming to Havana" proposes the impossible as no unassisted human is capable of traversing ninety miles across the Caribbean Sea from Florida to Cuba. Yet it is a journey said to have taken place countless of times in the minds of Cubans wishing to reach the United States, and Cuban immigrants dreaming of returning home. In his suite of new paintings, Azaceta invites viewers to undertake their own imaginative journeys through his imagery. These paintings explore the idea of "crossing over" in myriad ways: between abstraction and figuration, between geometric and organic forms, between Cuban and American culture, and between the historically linked cities of New Orleans and Havana.

Come join us for the  Twelfth Night and Joan of Arc’s birthday, admirers of the Maid of New Orleans will gather at Woldenberg Park at 5:30 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m.. walk up Conti Street , then down Decatur Street to the St. Joan statue at St. Phillip Street in the New Place de France. The parade will honor of the life and death of Jeanne D’Arc, born January 6, 1412, in Domremy , France , who was burned at the stake at age nineteen, two years after her success at the Battle of Orléans, France. This first annual parade will feature three Joan of Arcs, in addition to artists, musicians, and revelers of all ages in medieval/Renaissance costumes.

The parade will be lit by processional candles carried by 50 participants, and parade participants will sing a Joan of Arc marching song, put to an ancient French melody. Caye Mitchell of the New Orleans Posse, a riding club whose members participate in many New Orleans parades, including the Lady Godivas in Muses, will play Joan as a soldier, riding on a white horse carrying a replica of Joan’s standard (created by local artist Susan Gisleson) and will be flanked by two knights in armor on horseback bearing torches. One of these knights will be her husband Fred Mitchell, portraying the Bastard of Orléans, one of Joan’s most loyal comrades. Kelly Faucheux, one of the owners of Renaissance Publishing whose company logo happens to be the image of the Joan of Arc statue in the French Quarter—will ride on a horse as the beatified Joan, wearing a halo and covered in gold as a symbol of Joan’s redemption and immortality.

Kelley shares a birthday with Joan of Arc, and is particularly excited to celebrate her 40th in this truly New Orleans fashion, surrounded by members of Renaissance Publishing Company dressed as angels. Australia James, an honors student at Helen Cox High School and a NOCCA theatre student, will portray Joan as prisoner. She will perform a monologue from George Bernard Shaw’s play Saint Joan at the statue at St. Phillip Street , giving voice to Joan just before her execution.

Before the parade, she will stand at the John Scott sculpture Ocean Song at Woldenberg Park , which with its mirrored shapes resembling flames foreshadows her fate. A highlight of the parade will be the limited edition gift boxed commemorative imported Italian Saint Joan of Arc medallions and necklaces that Rob Clemenz, owner of SaintsforSinners.com will offer fortunate parade-goers. Additional throws include more reverent and unique items such as Joan of Arc prayer cards, as well as somewhat irreverent items like Atomic Fireball candies.

Parade participants will toast Joan below her statue with Goldschläger, a cinnamon schnapps containing tiny flakes of gold, generously provided by Glazer’s of Louisiana .

Renowned artist Frank Kelley Jr., a native of West Monroe, Louisiana, and recipient of numerous awards and national recognition for his art, will be in New Orleans as a part of Ashé Cultural Arts Center’s and the National Performance Network’s Artist Residency program. Kelley will be in residency at Audubon Charter Middle School.  The residency culminates with an art showing on January 16 at Ashé Cultural Arts Center, 1712 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard, where Audubon’s students, grades 4 through 8, will display their work at 4:00 p.m., followed by a lecture and showing by Kelley at 7:00 p.m.

In his residencies with children, Kelley uses art to assist them with practicing and improving their writing skills. Kelley teaches students to use art as a tool to express emotion. He wants them to know that an artist lives within each of them, delivering the message--“If I can do it, you can do it.” He has inspired young artists to espouse the artist within, while developing, and using their innate artistic skills of expression to deal with often debilitating and depressive issues. He is said to be captivating, not only to children, but also to adults.

Kelley’s work has been featured in numerous publications, namely Art & Antiques, Portfolio, Louisiana Road Trips, Images, Louisiana Life, Décor, and Delta Style. He was one of 25 artists featured in Colors to Life Beautiful, an exhibit in conjunction with the production The Color Purple, a production in which his piece entitled Survivor appeared.

Kelley’s work hangs on walls around the country. But close to home, he is proud to share that Louisiana’s own Senator Mary Landrieu has purchased his art for the walls of both her home and Washington office.

Just in time for the holiday season, Fredrick Guess is happy to announce first quarter dates for 2010 Color Your World Impressionist workshops. The workshops will be hosted in the Fredrick Guess Studio, at 910 Royal Street in the French Quarter. Participants of past workshops have hailed Guess’ ability to involve each individual’s creative muse in every step of the painting process. Almost everyone who has ever taken a workshop under Guess’ tutelage returns for more. Many have credited him with a distinct ability to open emergent artists to seeing the world around them in ways they’d never before dreamed. The holidays often present gift-giving dilemmas. What is just the right gift that’s something that recognizes just how special that certain someone is? It must be personal. It should show respect. And, the best gifts have an endurance that will be remembered for a long time to come. The gift of a life changing, life enhancing, learning experience can’t be topped. For that special loved one, may we recommend giving him or her the opportunity to explore a new facet of personal growth through Color Your World? Each session of the Color Your World workshops runs Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m.to about 4:00 p.m. Guess will guide participants through all aspects of introductory painting including setting up a color wheel and palette, composing an image, capturing light and shadow and so much more.

The New Orleans School of Art & Craft is the latest venture of art entrepreneur Blake Vonder Haar, the founder and director of The New Orleans Conservation Guild (opened in 1997), the Antique Frame Gallery (2001), New Orleans Art Supply (2005), as well as the hugely popular Bywater Art Market (2002).

New Orleans has had a long love affair with art and artists, and while there have been academic studies in Fine Art available in the city, there has been a real lack of instruction in Fine Craft. The School of Art & Craft hopes to fill that void with classes in Metalsmithing, Mosaics, Sculpture, Mixed Media, Puppet and Marionette making, Papermaking, Bookbinding, Calligraphy as well as Beginning Drawing and Oil Painting and Portraiture.

Additionally we will offer drawing and painting classes with a twist by offering specialties like “Cityscapes in Plein Air with Watercolor”; “Pen and Ink Techniques”, “Storytelling through Comics”, “Phototransfers using Encaustic”, “Printmaking: Linocuts”, "Photographing your Art", and "Basic Digital Photography", with much much more to come in the future. Several classes are designated for or appropriate for children and youth. Classes will range from one day to 12 week classes as well as weekend workshops, and will start as early as 9 am with several evening classes on the schedule.

The most operatic of all sacred works, the 1874 Requiem takes its rightful place in a season of treasures from the late Romantic period. The closing "Libera me" section was conceived in 1869 as part of a mass written by 13 different composers to honor Rossini after his death. That effort was abandoned, to Verdi's frustration, but five years later he resolved to bring a Requiem to completion as tribute to Alessandro Manzoni, the Italian poet, novelist and humanist. Verdi's admiration for the writer brought out his best - the music is infused with rhythmic vitality, sublime melodies and dramatic contrasts. He recycled a duet from Don Carlos and chose a quartet of singers from the European production of Aida for the Milan premiere, which he himself conducted. Join internationally known soloists from today's operatic stage, the New Orleans Opera Chorus, and choral groups from throughout our community for this special event.

On January 29, New Orleans Museum of Art will kick off the 2010 contemporary exhibition schedule with a celebration of New Orleans artists Quintron and Miss Pussycat. Widely known for multimedia performances in music clubs and alternative art spaces over the past 15 years, Quintron and Miss Pussycat have inspired audiences around the world with their innovative approach to puppetry and organ-based music. Parallel Universe: Quintron and Miss Pussycat Live at City Park will be the artists' first museum exhibition. In addition to past work, Miss Pussycat will debut a new music video, and an original music album by Quintron will be recorded entirely on-site at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Parallel Universe: Quintron and Miss Pussycat Live at City Park is organized by Miranda Lash, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.

The exhibition will begin with a vibrant and comprehensive display of Miss Pussycat's puppetry, a "parallel universe" the artist creates and channels within her set designs and performances. Hundreds of her puppets will take over the first gallery, spanning the length of Miss Pussycat's career. Arranged in miniature landscapes, her handmade puppets fuse the surreal and fantastical with a dose of whimsy. Functional in purpose and beguiling in form, the puppets enact scenes laden with satire, humor, and wit, while appearing innocent and child-like. Describing the puppets as "portals to the spirit world," the artist explains that the ritual of making a puppet show allows the puppets to assume a life of their own. Her versatile working method as a puppeteer ranges from swiftly arranging puppet shows for rock concert stages, to painstakingly directing videos with large support crews and arranging prerecorded soundtracks. Miss Pussycat's presentation will include the debut of her latest puppet video.

For the first time since 1983, the lovable all-male company Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo will travel to New Orleans in January for a one-night only performance to kick off the Mardi Gras season. Affectionately known as the “Trocks,” the ballet troupe will take to the stage at the Mahalia Jackson Theater of Performing Arts. By blending a passion for classical ballet with an affectionate parody of great choreographers, The Trocks prove that hairy men in tutus and makeup can, indeed, dance on pointe without falling on their faces.

The evening begins with their signature work, Le Lac Des Cygnes (Act II) of Swan Lake, as staged by Trutti Gasparineti after Lev Ivanov and set to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Also on the program is Patterns in Space, a modern work in the style of Merce Cunningham, and La Viviendere, a ballet set to music by Cesare Pugni that introduced the Polka of Bohemia to 19th -century London.

The Trocks close the performance with their variation on Marius Petipa’s classic French work Paquita, with music by Ludwig Minkus. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo was originally founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts who wanted to present a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form. The dancers adopt outrageous stage names, such as Ida Nevasayneva, Katarina Bychkova and Minnie Van Driver, and create outlandish back stories and alter egos to match. But a performance by the Trocks is more than just parody.

The nine-year period between the transfer of the Louisiana Purchase territory in 1803 and the addition of Louisiana to the Union as its 18th state in 1812 was one of chaos and uncertainty, but also of cultural complexity and institutional innovation. Historians from across the country will explore the diverse cast of characters who helped shape this formative period in Louisiana’s history.

Mark Fernandez, professor of history at Loyola University New Orleans, will serve as the moderator for this year’s event.  Speakers William C. Davis, Lo Faber, Robert L. Paquette, Jennifer M. Spear and Christina Vella will address topics such as the Laffite brothers, free people of color and New Orleans as a territorial city.

Harkening back to a time when the horse was a symbol of grace and majesty, the Lipizzaner Stallions are truly a great experience to be enjoyed by the entire family!

The Lipizzan is a rare and unique breed; its history and culture is known worldwide. The Walt Disney movie The Miracle of the White Stallions, depicting General George S. Patton saving them at the end of World War II from certain extinction, created an even greater world-wide interest in the Lipizzaner breed. Had it not been for Patton, there would be no Lipizzans today.

An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya - from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities. Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” MAMMA MIA! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

Guess will guide participants

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade rolls down the lower section of Magazine Street and St. Charles Avenue. Marchers and riders in the parade will have plenty of green beads and doubloons and, if the visitor is really lucky, he or she might catch a coveted potato or head of cabbage. The tuxedo-clad marchers also hand out paper flowers in exchange for a kiss on the hand or cheek. Make sure you wear something green – with so many parade goers, the law of St. Paddy’s day attire is strictly enforced and if you don’t follow it, you may just get pinched. There is also a block party located at Annunciation Square, near Chippewa and Race Streets. Show up and you’ll find plenty of Irish music and dancers, food from local restaurants, arts and crafts booths, wine and beer. Off-street parking is available. All proceeds go to benefit St. Michael’s Special School.

The composer's own stormy sea voyage from Germany to England may have provided impetus for his inspired treatment of the famous legend. The Flying Dutchman, having struggled to round the Cape of Good Hope during a whirling gale, recklessly swears to complete the task, even if it takes an eternity. He is condemned by the forces of darkness to sail until Judgment Day, unless he meets a woman willing to die in order to save him. Permitted to land only once every seven years to seek redemption, the Dutchman's ship docks in a Norwegian coastal town where he encounters Senta. Already obsessed with the gloomy myth, she is torn between her lover Erik, and the compelling, mysterious stranger. Wagner's wild and haunting opera, first heard in 1843, is his earliest work to be performed regularly worldwide. Don't miss this powerful close to our season!

They arrive by auto, air, bus and train to come in for the spring event that features authentic Cajun cuisine. Boiled Crawfish with all the “fixins” & Crawfish Dishes such as Crawfish Bread, Crawfish Pasta, Crawfish Pies, Crawfish Rice, and Crawfish Jambalaya adorn the limelight while many other food booths tickle just about everyone’s pallet. The weekend of festivities boasts proudly of its ability to reunite families, attract family reunions, spark new relationships and spread joy throughout the entire atmosphere.
