Photographer Michael P. Smith (1937–2008) captured the heart and soul of New Orleans’s music, culture, and folkways. He documented the physical and social structures that helped shape the unique cultural identity of his native New Orleans. In 2007, The Collection acquired Smith’s body of work, ensuring both its long-term preservation and ultimate public access.

In the Spirit: The Photography of Michael P. Smith from The Historic New Orleans Collection marks the inaugural public presentation of the Michael P. Smith Archive from The Historic New Orleans Collection. The exhibition includes unique displays at The Collection and the Contemporary Arts Center.

The Historic New Orleans Collection,
533 Royal Street

From 1968 to 2004, New Orleans native Michael P. Smith immersed himself in the larger world of the Crescent City’s musical culture. Upon earning the trust of his subjects, Smith was granted access to practices often hidden from the public eye.

The Historic New Orleans Collection’s display, Beyond the Music, invites you to step into the worlds of brass bands, Mardi Gras Indians, and jazz funerals; spiritual churches, second lines, and Louisiana folkways. Divided into eight thematic sections, the display’s 80-plus photographs bear witness to events both elusive and personal.

Previously on Piety derives its name from 617 Piety Street, the Bywater address where the original exhibition took place. A raw warehouse space temporarily converted into a makeshift exhibition site, 617 Piety's impressive length and ceiling height made it possible for the artists involved to develop highly ambitious works that, while not site-specific, would have been extremely difficult to realize in a more conventional gallery setting. Featuring New Orleans artists Gerard Caliste, Rondell Crier, Jan Gilbert, Jana Napoli, and Rontherin Ratliff, each will be represented by a single large-scale installation, originally shown together as a Satellite Exhibition for Prospect.1. The five installations in Previously on Piety share a reference to New Orleans in the immediate post-Katrina era, and some deal directly with the aftermath of the flooding and its effect on families, homes, and neighborhoods.

Of these, the best known is Jana Napoli's Floodwall, a freestanding wall made into 32-foot sections, into which the individual drawers from hundreds of individual chests of drawers, scattered and/or strewn about by the hurricane and subsequent floodwaters, have been salvaged and positioned as part of a continuous façade. Although widely exhibited and written about since 2007, Previously on Piety will mark the first time Floodwall has been exhibited in New Orleans in an institutional setting. In Gerard Caliste's work Walking on Water, the walls and floor of a single room are painted to give the visual impression of a neighborhood in which the inhabitants are gathered around the periphery, holding vigil while a house sinks into the water. A single hand reaching from a hole in the house's attic attempts to grasp at a rope suspended from a helicopter - the latter indicated only by a hole in the painted clouds on the ceiling. Admission: FREE through July 12

The moments captured in Michael P. Smith music photographs are as familiar to the people of New Orleans as they are enthralling to Jazz Fest visitors. Since the first edition of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1970 until 2005, Smith documented the annual music, culinary and crafts bonanza that has become one of the city's signature events, and his photographs annually line the Gospel, Blues, and Jazz tents, paying witness to past performances in those same tents. In fact, the visual iconography of Jazz Fest as a showcase for legendary musical performance must be at least partly credited to Smith's images, which have been captured in two full-length Jazz Fest books that helped spread the word to fans around the world.

This exhibition will bring together one hundred twenty-five photographs taken at Jazz Fest during a twenty-five year period, from its inception in 1970 to 1995. All works come from the Michael P. Smith Archive of the Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC), who have graciously lent objects from their collection, as well as allowing many new prints to be made of some Jazz Fest images that have never been exhibited. On view in the first floor galleries. Admission: FREE through July 12

Admission:  $26.00 (Fri & Sat); $21.00 (Sun) and include a $5.00 bar credit.
The action heats up this summer as Running With Scissors stumbles back to Le Chat Noir, bringing to life everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure: Jacqueline Susann’s VALLEY OF THE DOLLS! In 2005, the company performed the show as a one-night-only staged reading, and fans have been clamoring for us to do a full production ever since. Which only goes to prove: clamor and y’all shall receive!

One part homage, one part parody, Running With Scissors' adaptation of Susann’s camp classic follows three very different young women as they enter the tantalizing, treacherous world of show-biz: Anne Welles (Brian Peterson), a WASPy good girl in search of true love; Jennifer North (Dorian Rush), a knockout model with seriously bad luck; and Neely O’Hara (Lisa Picone), a crass cutie who’d crawl over her own mother for a starring role—or a stiff drink. A cavalcade of characters stands between these three and their glittery dreams—nosy secretaries, invalid lounge singers, and of course, Helen Lawson (Bob Edes Jr.), a particularly blousy Broadway babe who’s been around the block. The production also stars Brad Caldwell, Jack Long, and Dwayne Sepcich. Costumes are by Kate Jensen and Brian Peterson; sets by Brad Caldwell; props by Liz Zibilich. The script was adapted by the company from Susann’s novel, the subsequent movie, and other fabulous sources.

The Go 4th on the River Dueling Barges Fireworks Extravaganza is the annual Independence Day Celebration along the New Orleans Riverfront with all-day activities for the whole family. New Orleans Summers are hot – and there is no hotter place to be for the Fourth of July than in the Crescent City. The biggest celebration happens on the banks of the Mississippi with the annual Go Fourth on the River extravaganza. “Dueling Barges” is an exciting fireworks show to the tune of patriotic music – it’s a world renown, one-of-a-kind spectacle! Spend the day exploring the French Quarter before settling down for the show. There are a lot of different locations to catch the excitement along the river, so no matter where you watch, you’ll be front and center for the action!
