When Japanese forces landed on and occupied the Aleutian Islands of Attu, Agattu, and Kiska in June of 1942, it marked the first time that enemy troops had occupied American territory since the War of 1812. After capturing the islands, despite terrible weather conditions, Japanese troops garrisoned Attu and Kiska for nearly a year before American and Canadian forces regained control in the summer of 1943.
