Gospel/Blues/Rock supergroup The Word features John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood), Robert Randolph (Robert Randolph & the Family Band), and brothers Luther & Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars).
“Sweet surrender's always been the subtext of gospel music, but the velvet punch of this superstar jam band will knock out secular audiences as well.”
The Word is a super group seeking something sacred, and the band developed from a mutual affection for gospel music and the Sacred Steel tradition shared by keyboardist John Medeski and Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars, both having discovered the little known genre through a series of albums released by Arhoolie Records in the 1990s and early 2000s. Luther Dickinson were particularly fond of a song called "Without God" on the Sacred Steel Live! album, the only track credited to a then-unknown Robert Randolph. They contacted Randolph and recruited him to form their own Sacred Steel band, likely the first initiated by musicians outside the House of God church organization.
The Word’s appearance at The Joy is one of only two announced The Word dates in 2014.
