During D-Day on June 6, 1944, the Naval Construction Battalions called "Seabees" were among the first to arrive on the beaches of Normandy. They were tasked with demolishing underwater and onshore steel barriers that had been set up by the Germans to stop any amphibious landings, constructing pontoon causeways to allow the troops to charge onto the beaches, manning ferries known as "Rhinos" that carried men and supplies from ships ashore, and building offshore cargo and docking facilities. The Seabees landed hundreds of thousands of tons of war material daily and helped land more than a million Allied fighting men in Western Europe within a month of the initial landing. Feel free to bring your lunch or just come and enjoy the lecture. For more information call 504-528-1944 x 229.
