Gallery Bienvenu Presents - Artist: Sibylle Peretti "The Unusual Kind"

German-born artist Sibylle Peretti conjures visions of childhood and childhood lost. In Perettis works, children are often grouped in pairs, conversing wordlessly with one another or with birds, water, or flowers, as if immersed in a mystical union with nature. Her ethereal imagery and haunting thematic subtexts captivate the viewers imagination.

Perettis exhibition at Gallery Bienvenu features porcelain sculptures and mixed-media works on panel, which incorporate myriad layers of paper, oil paint, and watercolor on either side of Plexiglas panels. Her unique techniques impart a texture that complements the works conceptual nuance. Collectors and museum curators around the world have responded to Peretti's vision, which hovers between fairy tale, dream, and historic fact.

The current series was inspired by a growing fascination with children raised with little or no exposure to human beings. With their immaculate innocence, such children have intrigued storytellers and researchers for ages from Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome, who are said to have been nursed by a wolf to Victor of Aveyron, made famous by Truffault's film, The Wild Child to Genie, a feral child whose discovery made headlines in the 1970s.

These children live in a kind of private, untouchable world, the artist says, in which their honesty and purity opens doors of fantasies and dreams. With Peretti's imagery as a springboard, viewers may project themselves into the children's archaic, pre-verbal world. The works reconnect us to dormant memories or emotions, inducing free associations that encourage the mind to skim and skip where rationality alone could not lead. It is this freeing of the imagination, coupled with the rigors she lavishes on composition and surface, that so eloquently distinguishes her work.

New Orleans Museum of Art Presents - Woodward Exhibition Opening Reception

Come join us at The Museum of Art Opening Reception for the William Woodward Exhibition. Drawing from the holdings of both institutions, the exhibition features more than 70 paintings, etchings, sculpture and ephemera related to Woodward's life and works. A native of Massachusetts, Woodward came to New Orleans in the 1880s to teach fine arts, mechanical drawing and architectural drawing at Tulane University.

Woodward was involved with every facet of architecture in New Orleans, consulting on the design of Tulane's new building for architecture classes. He also designed and built his own home in Uptown New Orleans. His interest in architecture evolved into a passionate commitment to preservation. The first artist to focus intensely on the Vieux Carré, Woodward documented the Quarter's rich cultural heritage in vignettes of daily life-women at market, street cleaners, deliverymen and milkmaids driving drayage carts and residents engaged in their daily activities.

Woodward's depictions of French Quarter buildings focused public attention on the heedless destruction of historic properties. The exhibition offers an opportunity to view a large selection of Woodward's renderings of the French Quarter and to judge the strength of his artistic contribution.

The play is the hauntingly complex true tale of the quietly dignified Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who not only outwitted the Nazis and Communists, but could also spot a priceless antique at 100 yards. Playwright Doug Wright spent ten years interviewing Charlotte and developing this play. For Charlotte collected antiques from abandoned or bombed houses, enough to turn her East Berlin home into a museum, and transform the basement into a salon and haven for gay artists and intellectuals struggling to survive under the repressive regime.

She received the Medal of Honor from the reunified German government for preserving antiques and culture. But before her life was over, all of her life story would be called into question. Yet this is not a story about being gay, not a story about being a cross-dresser and not a story about cold war politics. It is a story about survival and one astounding person. And, by the way, its funny, too. Directed by Carl Walker - Co-Production with All Kinds of Theatre. Tom Dent Literary Festival

This is a three day festival that highlights the works of contemporary African American writers and poets. The event is named in the honor of the late New Orleans writer and historian, Thomas Covington Dent, who was a mentor to African-American writers and called attention to the African-American experience through poetry magazines and theater.

Our festival includes a Spoken Word Session, Author’s Showcase, and an afternoon forum. The spoken word poets will include the following: Dr. Mona Lisa Saloy, WordPlay NO, New Orleans Youth Slam (N.O.Y.S.), and Nik Richard "the Voice of Reason". It will be held at 6:30 pm on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Main Library, 219 Loyola Avenue. Our author's showcase will include the following: Clifton Casteel author of A Lady’s Heart and Soul: My Life as a Colored-Negro-Black-African-American, Dr. Keith Ferdinand, and Dr. D'Ann Penner authors of Overcoming Katrina: African American Voices from the Crescent City and Beyond at our Author’s Showcase.

The author’s showcase will be held at 6:30 pm on Friday, November 6, 2009 at the Main Library, 219 Loyola Avenue. Our Tom Dent forum speakers will be Carlotta Walls Lanier and Lisa Page Frazier. Held the first Saturday of each month, these free 40-minute presentations will be conducted by Longue Vue’s native plant specialists, who will focus on a different topic each month. The Wild Garden, a garden devoted to featuring native plants in an idealized setting, will be the setting for these conversations. After each presentation, participants will receive a complimentary native plant. The Native Plant Conversations program is facilitated by a generous grant from the Greater New Orleans Foundation Environmental Fund.

Japan Fest, the largest annual celebration of Japanese culture in the Gulf South, returns to the New Orleans Museum of Art for a full day of traditional music, dancing and martial arts demonstrations, plus food, games, crafts and more spread throughout the Museum and the adjacent Dreyfous Meadow in City Park. Like all current exhibitions and public programs, Japan Fest is through the generosity of The Helis Foundation. All outdoor Japan Fest activities are free to everyone. The crowd-pleasing Kaminari Taiko of Houston return with their massive drumming demonstration as headliners of this year's Japan Fest. Other highlights include numerous demonstrations of traditional Japanese arts, the Japan Club's annual tea ceremony demonstrations and a raffle with prizes including one roundtrip airline ticket to Japan, courtesy of Continental Airlines. Patrons will enjoy tours of the Japanese Gallery starting at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Inside NOMA attendees will find Japanese swords display, calligraphy, craft sales, Anime short films and more.

The New Orleans Botanical Garden display new varieties of annual plants for All American Selections, national seed companies as well as our own in house trials of plants that have not been tried in our gardens. We also have a display of many varieties of Salvias from the Herb Society of America. There will be a presentation of what trial and display gardens are and how they impact the consumer. There will be a tour of these gardens looking at new varieties of petunias that will be released in 2010!

Susan Capley has a BS degree in Plant and Soil Science with the emphasis in Horticulture Enterprise Management from the University of Kentucky. She was the horticulturist at the University of Kentucky State Botanical Garden. She has also worked in landscape maintenance, organic vegetable production, greenhouse production, and a floral designer for out door display gardens and indoor floral.
