These are word-for-word performances from noted people (and some ordinary folk) saying things they never meant for the public to hear: surveillance tapes, secretly recorded conversations, forgotten open mics, on-camera diatribes, released emails, private correspondence, et cetera. VERBATIM VERBOTEN has collected over three hundred such pieces, with more being added all the time...meaning no performance is like the one before. Calling all young singers! Jefferson Performing Arts Society is currently still accepting children and teens for their Children's Choirs and the NEW JPAS Jam & Jive Show Choir! To register and join, please drop by a rehearsal time for the appropriate age level choir to fill-out the paperwork and meet the choirs! (formerly the JPAS Youth Chorale). All choirs are vocally directed by Mary Lou with accompanist Garrett Fried. Rehearsals for the JPAS Apprentice Choir will be Saturdays from at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School, 4119 Saint Elizabeth Drive in Kenner and continue through the Spring. There is a one-time tuition fee of $300 for the Apprentice Choir plus additional costuming fees.

Hutton transitions from recently playing the role of King Arthur in Lerner and Lowe's CAMELOT at Rivertown Repertory Theatre, into the high-heeled and fishnet stockings of Dr. Frank 'N Furter for THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW with JPAS! Hutton has been seen as the leading man on stages throughout the Big Easy including Tulane Summer Lyric, Le Petit Theatre and on the JPAS stages. This is the first role where he has worn three-inch high-heels and a bustier! Dr. Frank 'N Furter's motley crew of characters from another dimension include an array of the best New Orleans local talent. Lara Grice, one of New Orlean's most talented and versatile leading ladies, plays the outrageous Columbia. Grice has graced most all of the stages in the New Orleans area portraying roles ranging from the ditzy Norma in VICTOR/VICORIA to Jaque in Shakespear's AS YOU LIKE IT. She is often seen in local and national TV commercials.

Chris Wecklein joins the cast of ROCKY as Riff Raff, the shifty hunch-backed "butler." Wecklein has also been seen on most stages throughout the New Orleans area and notable in the long-running production of BLACK AND WHITE BLUES at Le Chat Noir. This power-house cast features several other local theatre stars including Marlene Thian as Magenta, Matias Grau, III as Brad and Lucy Faust as Janet, Armando L. Leduc as Eddie and Brandon Sutton as Rocky.

The cast also features Daniel Deshazo, Samantha Gregory, Michael Indest, Diana Macera, Helen Jane Planchet, Colleen Robinson and Matt Standley. Don Lewis, a New Orleans actor, will begin to read the book on Monday, Oct. 26. The readings will occur daily, Monday through Fridays at 2 p.m., and they will repeat at 8:30 p.m. Each half-hour segment amounts to about 12-14 pages, meaning that the book will be completed in about 25 installments.

Tom Dent Literary Festival

This is a three day festival that highlights the works of contemporary African American writers and poets. The event is named in the honor of the late New Orleans writer and historian, Thomas Covington Dent, who was a mentor to African-American writers and called attention to the African-American experience through poetry magazines and theater.

Our festival includes a Spoken Word Session, Author’s Showcase, and an afternoon forum. The spoken word poets will include the following: Dr. Mona Lisa Saloy, WordPlay NO, New Orleans Youth Slam (N.O.Y.S.), and Nik Richard "the Voice of Reason". It will be held at 6:30 pm on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Main Library, 219 Loyola Avenue. Our author's showcase will include the following: Clifton Casteel author of A Lady’s Heart and Soul: My Life as a Colored-Negro-Black-African-American, Dr. Keith Ferdinand, and Dr. D'Ann Penner authors of Overcoming Katrina: African American Voices from the Crescent City and Beyond at our Author’s Showcase.

The author’s showcase will be held at 6:30 pm on Friday, November 6, 2009 at the Main Library, 219 Loyola Avenue. Our Tom Dent forum speakers will be Carlotta Walls Lanier and Lisa Page Frazier. Carlotta Walls Lanier, the youngest member of the little rock nine and author of A Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School. Lisa Frazier Page, a Dillard University alumnae and a contributor to Mrs. Lanier's book. Our forum will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Main Library, 219 Loyola Avenue.

I AM MY OWN WIFE, written by Doug Wright is the hauntingly complex true tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who successfully outwitted not only the Nazis and Communists, but could also spot a priceless antique at 100 yards. The play is the hauntingly complex true tale of the quietly dignified Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who not only outwitted the Nazis and Communists, but could also spot a priceless antique at 100 yards. Playwright Doug Wright spent ten years interviewing Charlotte and developing this play. For Charlotte collected antiques from abandoned or bombed houses, enough to turn her East Berlin home into a museum, and transform the basement into a salon and haven for gay artists and intellectuals struggling to survive under the repressive regime.

She received the Medal of Honor from the reunified German government for preserving antiques and culture. But before her life was over, all of her life story would be called into question. Yet this is not a story about being gay, not a story about being a cross-dresser and not a story about cold war politics. It is a story about survival and one astounding person.
