VERBATIM VERBOTEN has collected over three hundred such pieces, with more being added all the time...meaning no performance is like the one before. The show has enjoyed extended successful runs in Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, New Orleans, and New York. Now after a three-year hiatus, VV returns. Produced by Clove Productions. Hosted by Michael Martin.

Gallery Bienvenu Presents - Artist: Sibylle Peretti "The Unusual Kind"
October 6, 2009 - November 28, 2009
Times: Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Location:  Gallery Bienvenu, 518 Julia Street
Phone:  (504) 525-0518
German-born artist Sibylle Peretti conjures visions of childhood and childhood lost. In Perettis works, children are often grouped in pairs, conversing wordlessly with one another or with birds, water, or flowers, as if immersed in a mystical union with nature. Her ethereal imagery and haunting thematic subtexts captivate the viewers imagination.

Perettis exhibition at Gallery Bienvenu features porcelain sculptures and mixed-media works on panel, which incorporate myriad layers of paper, oil paint, and watercolor on either side of Plexiglas panels. Her unique techniques impart a texture that complements the works conceptual nuance. Collectors and museum curators around the world have responded to Peretti's vision, which hovers between fairy tale, dream, and historic fact.

The current series was inspired by a growing fascination with children raised with little or no exposure to human beings. With their immaculate innocence, such children have intrigued storytellers and researchers for ages from Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome, who are said to have been nursed by a wolf to Victor of Aveyron, made famous by Truffault's film, The Wild Child to Genie, a feral child whose discovery made headlines in the 1970s.

These children live in a kind of private, untouchable world, the artist says, in which their honesty and purity opens doors of fantasies and dreams. With Peretti's imagery as a springboard, viewers may project themselves into the children's archaic, pre-verbal world. The works reconnect us to dormant memories or emotions, inducing free associations that encourage the mind to skim and skip where rationality alone could not lead. It is this freeing of the imagination, coupled with the rigors she lavishes on composition and surface, that so eloquently distinguishes her work.

On December 20, 1803, the Louisiana Purchase was signed, confirming the transfer of the former French colony to the United States. Statehood, however, was not immediate. For nearly 10 years, Louisiana was entrenched in a turbulent period, rife with political disputes and culture clashes. The exhibition Between Colony & State: Louisiana in the Territorial Period, 1803-1812, and its companion online component, examines the people, places, and events that shaped this fascinating period. Highlights include manuscript maps, newspapers from the period, and artists' depictions of life during this time.

Glen David Andrews, articulates his city's deep musical heritage through his performing better than anyone his age. He has one foot planted in the more contemporary, funky sounds that define today's New Orleans brass band scene; meanwhile, Andrews shows his elders the respect he believes they deserve, as his other foot rests firmly in the music's time-honored traditions.

Admission:  $35.00 includes reception
Join us at the Southern Rep Theatre for the Regional Premiere of the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize Winner I AM MY OWN WIFE. I AM MY OWN WIFE, written by Doug Wright is the hauntingly complex true tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who successfully outwitted not only the Nazis and Communists, but could also spot a priceless antique at 100 yards.

The play is the hauntingly complex true tale of the quietly dignified Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who not only outwitted the Nazis and Communists, but could also spot a priceless antique at 100 yards. Playwright Doug Wright spent ten years interviewing Charlotte and developing this play. For Charlotte collected antiques from abandoned or bombed houses, enough to turn her East Berlin home into a museum, and transform the basement into a salon and haven for gay artists and intellectuals struggling to survive under the repressive regime.

She received the Medal of Honor from the reunified German government for preserving antiques and culture. But before her life was over, all of her life story would be called into question. Yet this is not a story about being gay, not a story about being a cross-dresser and not a story about cold war politics. It is a story about survival and one astounding person. And, by the way, its funny, too. Directed by Carl Walker - Co-Production with All Kinds of Theatre. Southern Rep provides discounts for students, seniors, active military, K-12 teachers, and theatre professionals (I.D. required).

Trickster at the Gate - A Play by Jonathan Patrick Bray
November 7, 2009
Times: 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Location:  Alvar Public Library, 913 Alvar Street (Bywater)
Jennifer has come home to identify the body of Nell, a woman who believed she was the incarnation of Yoruba God, Esu Elegba. Will Jennifer's ghosts haunt her upon identifying the body, or will she find some peace with Nell, herself, and the mortician? As it tracks Nell's life the play takes us from the Harlem Renaissance, to the mystical realms of the Yoruban gods, to present day Louisiana. Written under The Big Read Acadiana Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Trickster at the Gate finds its inspiration in the life and works of Zora Neale Hurston, gaining approval of Hurston's biographer and niece, Lucy Anne Hurston. The play runs about 75 minutes. A discussion of Hurston's classic novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, will occur following the play. "...a captivating cross-cultural (often funny) play that transcends (what some might dismiss as 'trendy') race issues and enters into that place all art dwells: the core mystery of human spiritual experience.

This free event, presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, takes place Saturday, December 12, and Sunday, December 13, at the Jazz & Heritage Center, located at 1225 North Rampart Street. Performers on Dec. 12 include Kermit Ruffins – who is not only one of New Orleans’ favorite trumpeters, but he’s also a featured character on the now-filming HBO drama “Tremé.” His latest album is called “Livin’ a Tremé Life.” Also appearing on Dec. 12 are Shamarr Allen, the Joe Krown Organ Trio featuring Walter “Wolfman” Washington and Russell Batiste and jazz combo Bleu Orleans. On Dec. 13, we present a “trifecta” of Tremé horn players from the Andrews family – Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and his band, Orleans Avenue, James “Twelve” Andrews & the Crescent City All-Stars and the Glen David Andrews band. Additional performers include jazz combo Bleu Orleans, the Imperial Quintet of New Orleans featuring Esquizito’s tribute to Danny Barker, and the students and faculty of both campuses of the Heritage School of Music. Of course, there will be great gumbo to sample in several varieties: okra, “kitchen sink filé,” Cajun with andouille sausage and a dark roux, and gumbo z’herbes. Our invited chefs – including Leah Chase of Dooky Chase Restaurant - will demonstrate their gumbo cooking techniques in special presentations twice each day, at noon and at 2:45 p.m. Don’t forget to shop for holiday gifts at the fourth annual Jazz & Heritage Holiday Bazaar. It’s the only place outside of Jazz Fest where you can get official festival t-shirts and other merchandise, plus a large assortment of CDs and locally produced, hand-made clothing, jewelry and home furnishings. It all happens from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart Street). Don’t miss the second annual Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival presented by the Foundation.
