Basin Street Records began promoting its first project in September 1997, a live recording of Kermit Ruffins at Tipitina's aptly titled The Barbecue Swingers Live. Six weeks of putting posters on telephone poles and flyers on car windshields resulted in a full house on November 7, 1997 at the world famous Tipitina's.
Nearly 20 years later, TEN time award winner of the OffBeat Best of the Best awards for best record label, Basin Street has helped record and distribute the music of New Orleans Nationally and Internationally.
Basin Street Records artists have won three Grammys. They have been finalists and winners of Billboard Music Awards, they have had two records hit #1 on the national jazz radio charts, and have had several others reach the top 10.

Artist recommendation: Dr. Michael White, Blue Crescent
Dr. Michael White is an accomplished, multi-faceted New Orleans-based clarinetist, bandleader, composer, musicologist, jazz historian, and educator widely regarded as one of the leading authorities and culture-bearers of traditional New Orleans jazz music. He has performed in over two dozen foreign countries, played on over 50 recordings, received countless awards, made multiple national television appearances, and been featured in major media publications. White has led The Original Liberty Jazz Band since 1981, and he also leads two smaller ensembles.
In the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, White's home was flooded with seven feet of water, and he lost a huge collection of musical memorabilia-he went on to release Blue Crescent an album that was called "what must surely be one of the greatest examples of New Orleans traditional jazz ever recorded."
Dr. Michael White's accolades include being awarded the Heritage Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts (the nation's highest award in the traditional and folk arts), being named the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities Humanist of the Year, and winning Clarinetist of the Year five times by Offbeat Magazine. The unique experiences that the clarinetist and university professor has had throughout his career, and his ability to articulate the significance and timelessness of the music has made him a highly influential speaker and performer. With a career now spanning over three decades, Michael White continues to grow his musical legacy as one of the authoritative figures on New Orleans Jazz Music, and one of the finest clarinetists to walk the streets of the crescent city.
Book Dr. Michael White to perform at your private events! Or treat your audience to a rare gem of music and history blended by the most perfect jazz storyteller and inspirational educators of our time.
Artist recommendation: Kermit Ruffins, We Partyin' Traditional Style
"We Partyin'!" Kermit Ruffins needs only two words to hype a New Orleans barroom for one of his weekly shows, and this, his personal slogan, sums up what this Big Easy ambassador is all about.
From playing himself in the HBO Series Treme, to barbecuing outside his bar, Kermit's Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge, to sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the trumpeter/vocalist keeps himself busy when he isn't on stage doing what he does best-entertaining and sharing his love of life with the world. He personifies the laid-back vibe of New Orleans.
But he did not come by his gifts easily. Ruffins did his homework and developed his stage persona and musical act by studying artists who came before him. He cut his teeth busking on the streets of the French Quarter, and while in high school co-founded the monumental Rebirth Brass Band.
Now, Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are a beloved institution - a must-see for every New Orleans visitor and a favorite of local critics and music lovers. With over fifteen albums to his credit including live albums capturing his inimitable stage presence (1998's The Barbecue Swingers Live and 2005's Live at Vaughan's), a collaboration with his Rebirth Brass Band brethren (2005's Throwback), a holiday album (Have A Crazy Cool Christmas ), an homage to New Orleans' traditional jazz (We Partyin' Traditional Style! ), and the party-anthem packed #imsoneworleans (2015) the New Orleans trumpeter shows no signs of slowing down.
Artist recommendation: Rebirth Brass Band, Move Your Body
Hailed by the New York Times as "a New Orleans institution," the Grammy Award-winning Rebirth Brass Band have been at the forefront of the brass band revival that they helped kick off over 30 years ago. Formed by the Frazier brothers, Phil and Keith, along with Basin Street labelmate Kermit Ruffins in 1983, The Rebirth Brass Band has gone from playing on corners in the French Quarter to selling out concert halls across the world and appearing in David Simon's HBO hit Treme.
In August of 2015, President Obama on a visit to New Orleans shared a list of things he plans to do when he leaves office. Top priority!....Rebirth at Maple Leaf on a Tuesday night! More recently, the band has represented New Orleans and our Jazz Heritage at the White House for International Jazz Day.
While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they've also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. "Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to," says The New York Times, "but it's more like a party than a machine. It's a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they're doing, anyone can cut loose." It perhaps can't be put more simply than in the words of Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, Flea, "Just saw THE REBIRTH BRASS BAND, unbelievable. Hard as hell, free as a ray of light, there is not a band on earth that is better. Stunning."
No band exemplifies the essence and soul of New Orleans like Rebirth Brass Band.
Catch Rebirth every Tuesday at Maple Leaf Bar - 10:30pm!Top
