Following are listings of suggestions and ideas to help aid convention facilities and hotels in their quest for adding Green to their buildings.
Food and Beverage
1. Start a recycling program. Target paper, cans,toilets and plastic.
2. Use reusable serving utensils, napkins and tablecloths when food and beverages are served to staff and to customers.
3. Serve juice, iced tea, coffee and water in pitchers or bulk containers.
4. Coffee grounds serve as high nutrient compost for organic herb gardens.
5. Use bulk dispensers or reusable containers for beverages and condiments.
6. Plant an organically-grown garden for vegetables and herbs.
7. Purchase a mulcher to chop-up garden clippings and create your own mulch.
8. Implement water saving strategies such as not pre-filling water glasses or not providing a saucer under coffee cups.
9. Reduce the use of ice in drinking water.
10. Donate cans for recycling.
11. Consider transitioning a food and beverage outlet into a certifed green restaurant. www.dinegreen.com
Rooms
1. Ensure that linen/towel reuse options are communicated to guests.
2. Provide cards to guests to use during their stay to inform housekeeping if the guest would like linens and towels changed.
3. Institute water conservation practices such as low-flow showerheads and toilets.
4. Do not replace amenities unless they are gone.
5. Donate old sheets, pillowcases, furniture, table linens, etc.
6. Recycle stained tablecloths into napkins, chef's aprons or laundry bags.
7. Donate a meeting room to a local environmental group.
8. Donate leftover food to a local non-profit organization.
9. Install window film to lower heating and cooling loads and reduce glare in guestrooms.
10. Provide guestroom recycler baskets for newspaper, white paper, glass, aluminum, cardboard and plastic.
12. Offer paperless check-in and check-out for guests.
13. Showcase the hotel's commitment to enviornmental responsibility in public areas of the hotel.
14. Provide glass cups and ceramic mugs (instead of plastic) for in-room beverages. Place cups and mugs upside down on paper doilies instead of covering with plastic wrapping.
15. Donate leftover guest amenities, old furniture and appliance to charity.
16. Place information about the hotel's green initiatives on your website.
17. Use eco-friendly inks for printing.
18. Recycle: Printer/toner cartridges and paper.
Information Compiled by the California Green Lodging Program Indicates:
1. Average-size hotels purchase more products in one week than 100 families do in a year.
2. Waste generation can be as high as 30 pounds per room per day. As much as 80% of the materials can be recycled.
3. Electricity accounts for 60 to 70% of the utility costs of a typical hotel.
